Nigerian singer Habeeb Okikiola, known as Portable, has claimed he has offered more support to emerging artists than several leading figures in the country’s music industry, including Olamide, Don Jazzy, Wizkid and Davido.
In a recent video, the artist stated that his assistance extends beyond the music community, adding that he also provides help to people from less privileged backgrounds.
Portable said many celebrities distance themselves from ordinary fans and upcoming musicians, while he maintains close interaction with supporters both offline and on social media. According to him, he regularly reposts videos of fans who promote his songs.
He alleged that some established artists make it difficult for newcomers to collaborate with them, even when financial compensation is involved. Portable insisted that his own approach is different, saying he assists people without placing conditions on them.
He described genuine support as offering shelter, food, clothing and financial backing for studio sessions to individuals in need. Anything short of that, he argued, should be considered business rather than charity.
Portable also criticised established artists who label upcoming acts as “ungrateful” when they choose independence, stating that many of those complaints stem from business arrangements rather than real acts of generosity.
