Nigeria’s long-running debate over informal power rotation between North and South is resurfacing early in the buildup to the 2027 general election, after Adamawa State Governor Umaru Fintiri said the presidency should remain in the South.
Speaking on Channels Television’s Sunrise Daily, Fintiri argued that while zoning is not written into Nigeria’s constitution, it has become a stabilising political understanding and should be respected for national unity. He said the South should be allowed to “complete eight years,” adding that it is “the South’s turn” to continue in 2027, according to Vanguard’s report.

Fintiri’s remarks land amid heightened manoeuvring across party lines. The governor also used the interview to defend his recent move from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), saying he wanted to better position Adamawa to benefit from the federal government.
The zoning conversation is politically sensitive because it sits at the intersection of regional balance, party strategy, and elite bargaining especially as defections and coalition-building accelerate ahead of the next electoral cycle. Recent reporting on the political impact of Fintiri’s defection has framed it as a significant shake-up in Adamawa’s contest for influence ahead of 2027.
