Mariah Carey’s performance at the opening ceremony of the Milano-Cortina 2026 Winter Olympics has sparked online debate over whether her vocals were performed live.

The six-time Grammy Award winner took the stage as part of the globally televised ceremony, which aimed to symbolically link Milan’s contemporary culture with the alpine heritage of Cortina d’Ampezzo. Carey opened her set in Italian with Nel Blu, dipinto di Blu, widely known as Volare, before transitioning into Nothing Is Impossible from her 2025 album Here For It All.

Soon after the broadcast, social media users began pointing out moments where Carey’s lip movements appeared slightly out of sync with the audio, raising speculation that the performance may have relied on pre-recorded vocals.

Neither Carey’s representatives nor Olympic organisers have commented on the claims. The broadcast itself did not clarify whether the vocals were live, contrasting with previous Olympic ceremonies where live performances were explicitly highlighted.

The discussion gained further traction as other musical segments during the ceremony, including performances by Laura Pausini and Andrea Bocelli, were widely praised for their apparent live delivery.

While the ceremony’s official theme, Harmony, was intended to highlight unity, Carey’s performance has emerged as one of the first viral talking points of the Milano-Cortina 2026 Winter Games.
