Rwandan singer Juno Kizigenza has been asked to stop using the stage alias “Rutwitsi,” following concerns raised about the term’s historical significance in Rwanda.

The request was made by the Minister of National Unity and Civic Engagement, Dr. Jean Damascène Bizimana, during a public discussion held on Wednesday, February 4, 2026. The minister was responding to questions related to the growing use of certain words in entertainment and youth culture that are linked to painful periods in Rwanda’s history.

Dr. Bizimana explained that while artists often adopt stage names to distinguish their work and connect with audiences, some terms should not be used without consideration of their historical meaning. He said the name “Rutwitsi” carries a heavy historical context and should not be repurposed for artistic branding.

The issue was raised after a social media user asked whether the artist should also be advised to abandon the alias, which Juno Kizigenza frequently references in his music introductions. In response, the minister said the singer should change the name.

Juno Kizigenza has used “Rutwitsi” as part of his artistic identity, alongside promoting his music label, Huha Records. The minister stressed that public figures have a responsibility to use language that respects Rwanda’s history, culture, and values.
