DRC: New biometric passport launched at USD 75
After months of waiting, the Democratic Republic of Congo has officially launched its new biometric passport, promising faster service, stronger security, and compliance with international standards.
The announcement was made on Tuesday, May 27, by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, International Cooperation, and Francophonie. The reform is part of the government’s 2024–2028 digital public service upgrade, led by President Félix Tshisekedi.

Application Timelines (Answering Public Concerns)
Many Congolese have asked online how long the process will take. Here's the government’s official answer:
📍 Kinshasa:➡️ 10 working days after biometric capture
📍 Provinces:➡️ 15 working days
🌍 Abroad (Embassies):➡️ 20 working days
No more waiting 3 to 6 months like before, this reform is meant to end delays.
What if I have Already Started the Process?
The Ministry clarified:
If you already paid for the old passport or applied before May 27, your request will automatically switch to the new version.
Sales of old application forms stopped on May 27, 2025.
The old passport will remain valid until it expires, and both passports will be accepted until 2030.
Why This Matters
This move comes as a response to long-standing complaints from citizens:
How long does it take now?”“I waited 6 months for my passport before.”“What guarantees do we have this time?”
The government says this reform ends such confusion. New capture centers are already set up in Kinshasa, and more are coming to provincial capitals.
President Tshisekedi’s Push for Change
The President first announced this passport reform in April during a Council of Ministers meeting. His goal: make public services faster, fairer, and accountable.
