The Democratic Republic of Congo has urged Irish authorities to ensure a transparent and impartial investigation into the death of Congolese national Yves Sakila in Dublin, according to 7sur7.cd.
DRC Foreign Minister Thérèse Kayikwamba Wagner raised the case during a meeting on Thursday, May 28, 2026, with Irish President Catherine Connolly in Dublin. Kinshasa said the talks focused partly on the circumstances surrounding Sakila’s death and the judicial process now under way.
Sakila, a 35-year-old Congolese IT specialist, died after a violent arrest incident in Dublin. Video shared widely on social media appeared to show him being restrained on the ground by private security guards.
Irish authorities have opened an investigation, while public pressure has grown around the case. Ireland’s RT É reported that the country’s Special Rapporteur on Racism and Racial Equality called for an independent investigation into Sakila’s death.
The case has also drawn wider attention in both Ireland and the Congolese diaspora. The Irish Times reported that Sakila’s death caused shock and anger in the DRC, where activists and community members have demanded accountability.
Kayikwamba said the DRC expects investigations to be transparent, impartial and diligent. She also reaffirmed Kinshasa’s commitment to protecting the rights and dignity of Congolese citizens abroad.
