Speaking during events marking his 90th birthday in Lagos, Idonije reflected on Afrobeat’s journey from a local movement to one of Africa’s biggest cultural exports. The respected music figure, known for managing Afrobeat pioneer Fela Kuti in the early years and as the grandfather of Grammy-winning superstar Burna Boy, said Nigerian artists continue to drive the genre’s global success.

For Idonije, Afrobeat’s roots and influence are inseparable from Nigeria. He argued that while the sound now resonates across continents, the country still produces many of the artists shaping its future and pushing its reach even further.
