Nigerian singer Burna Boy has said Afrobeat pioneer Fela Anikulapo Kuti remains the only artist he considers superior, as debate continues over the genre’s legacy and modern influence.
The remarks were made in a video shared on Instagram by social media personality Tunde Ednut, where Burna Boy described Fela as “the king” and said no other musician surpasses him.
The comments come amid ongoing online discussions in Nigeria over comparisons between contemporary Afrobeat stars and Fela Kuti. The debate intensified after fans compared singer Wizkid to Fela, a claim strongly rejected by Fela’s youngest son, Seun Kuti, who argued that such comparisons diminish his father’s historical and political impact.
Fela Kuti, who died in 1997, is widely credited with founding Afrobeat, blending African rhythms with jazz, funk, and politically charged lyrics. His work continues to influence many of today’s leading Afrobeat artists.
