Blaq Major a South African producer and DJ

Blaq Major is the South African producer, DJ and recording artist behind “Sdakiwe Sbali,” a 2024 hit that carried his studio instincts into the national spotlight. Born Thamsanqa Clifford Mpanza and raised in KwaZulu-Natal, he moved from a serious football dream to years of largely uncredited production work before Master KG helped open a new career chapter. His records now connect amapiano and electronic dance music with the melodic memory of maskandi.

Who is Blaq Major? Blaq Major is South African producer and DJ Thamsanqa Clifford Mpanza. A former Lamontville Golden Arrows reserve player, he broke through with “Sdakiwe Sbali,” won Gagasi FM’s 2024 Song of the Year and released the albums Ithemba and Ancestors. He continues to produce his own music while creating opportunities for emerging singers.

The Bolo-House Pulse Behind “Sdakiwe Sbali”

Blaq Major’s best records leave room for a voice to lead. He builds around repeating keyboard phrases, patient percussion and bass that arrives with enough weight to make a chorus feel communal. The approach sits close to amapiano, but it also carries the faster, emotionally direct pull often called bolo house. His Spotify artist profile describes a wider meeting of electronic production and traditional African rhythm.

“Sdakiwe Sbali,” featuring Bless The Gentleman and DJ Kap, is the clearest example. Released on 12 August 2024, it turns a drinking confession into a singalong without crowding the vocalist. A restrained opening gives way to bright keys, rolling drums and a refrain designed for repetition. The official recording credits name Thamsanqa Clifford Mpanza as producer, confirming that the artist at the front of the release also shaped its sound.

XTRAfrica’s “Sdakiwe Sbali” download and lyrics page captures the record at the centre of his breakthrough, while the full Blaq Major songs archive follows the catalogue that grew around it.

Maskandi Memory and KwaZulu-Natal Identity

Mpanza grew up in KwaZulu-Natal in a home led by his mother. He told the Herald that she loved maskandi, so the guitar-led storytelling tradition became part of his earliest musical environment. That influence does not make his electronic records sound like conventional maskandi. It appears instead in their direct emotion, circular melodies and respect for the singer’s story.

“Music has always been my first love.”

That statement helps explain why his productions can feel rooted without being nostalgic. IsiZulu vocals and South African dance rhythms often sit beside digital textures built for current clubs and streaming audiences. XTRAfrica’s South African music hub places his work inside the country’s much larger field of amapiano, Afro-house and pop releases.
