Ariel Wayz a Rwandan singer-songwriter from Rubavu
Ariel Wayz is a Rwandan singer and songwriter whose solo rise joined intimate R&B writing to the rhythmic flexibility of Afrobeats and Afro-fusion. Born Uwayezu Arielle in Rubavu, she trained at Nyundo School of Music, sang with Symphony Band and became widely recognised through records such as “Away,” “You Should Know” and “Wowe Gusa.”
Her career has since expanded through a TRACE Awards nomination, a Move Afrika performance, the album Hear to Stay and a Universal Music East Africa deal. She also uses X to share her music and connect with listeners as her work reaches beyond Rwanda.
Who is Ariel Wayz? Ariel Wayz, born Uwayezu Arielle, is a Rwandan singer-songwriter from Rubavu. A Nyundo-trained vocalist and former Symphony Band member, she broke through as a solo artist with “Away,” released her debut album Hear to Stay in 2025 and joined Universal Music East Africa that year.
“Away” and the Breakthrough That Changed Her Career
Ariel Wayz entered solo music with training and band experience behind her, but “Away” supplied the public turning point. Released with Juno Kizigenza in 2021, the duet paired an easily remembered romantic refrain with chemistry that translated strongly on video. Its official video on Ariel’s channel has continued to attract viewers years after release, making the song a durable marker in both artists’ catalogues.
The record did not create Ariel from nothing. It changed the scale on which listeners encountered a vocalist already trained in harmony, stage discipline and live arrangement. “Away” was a breakthrough, not a beginning.
When Ariel and Juno performed “Away” again during Davido’s Kigali concert in December 2025, XTRAfrica’s report on the performance showed that the collaboration remained recognisable long after its original release cycle.
Creative Roots in Rubavu, Nyundo and Symphony
Uwayezu Arielle was born on 9 September 2000 in Rubavu, Rwanda’s Western Province. She is 25 years old as of 5 August 2026. Universal Music East Africa’s signing profile identifies her birth date and birthplace, while earlier Rwandan reporting supplies the family and education story behind the artist.
She grew up as the fifth of eight children. Her mother had sung with Orchestre Ingeri in the 1990s. In a 2024 VIP Access episode, Ariel connected her early sense of responsibility to growing up in the middle of a large family.
