US Urges President Ruto to Protect Youth and Civil Society

The United States has called on Kenyan President William Ruto to prioritize the protection and support of the nation's youth, civil society, and media. In a recent phone conversation, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken emphasized the critical role of youth in Kenya's development and urged President Ruto to uphold their rights, including the freedom to express themselves through street demonstrations as enshrined in the Kenyan constitution.

Secretary Blinken reiterated the necessity of defending these voices and holding security forces accountable for their actions.

The US State Department expressed its alarm over rising incidents of police brutality and the arbitrary detention of protesters, highlighting that the situation is being closely monitored.

In addition to the US concerns, ambassadors and high commissioners from 13 countries, including representatives from Canada, Denmark, Finland, Germany, Ireland, the Netherlands, Estonia, Norway, Sweden, Romania, Belgium, the UK, and the US, have criticized the violence observed during protests against the Finance Bill 2024.

The international representatives urged both the Kenyan government and the demonstrators to engage in constructive dialogue to resolve the contentious issues surrounding the bill.

The combined pressure from international allies underscores the global community's concern for human rights and democratic principles in Kenya. As the situation unfolds, the focus remains on ensuring the safety and rights of all citizens, especially the youth, who are pivotal to the nation's future.
