Rwanda Confirms Eight Deaths from Marburg Virus, 18 Quarantined Amid Rising Concerns

In the announcement on Sunday night, the Ministry of Health in Rwanda announced that eight people have died from the Marburg virus, while 18 others are being treated in quarantine.


During a press conference on Sunday, the Minister of Health, Dr. Sabin Nsanzimana, stated that they have identified close to 300 people who have been in contact with those who are sick or have died from the virus.


Dr. Nsanzimana said, "The majority of cases and deaths are mainly among medical workers, especially those who have been treated for tuberculosis." the hospital where the disease was first detected has not been disclosed, but it is reported to be located in some hospitals in the city of Kigali.


 the Ministry of Health announced new measures to prevent the spread of the virus, including:

  • Treatment of patients in all clinics is prohibited for a period of 14 days.

  • Funerals for Marburg victims will be limited to fewer than 50 people.

  • People infected with the virus will not be allowed to go home or go to church.


The Ministry of Health stated that additional measures will be announced in the coming days.

the announcement followed various reports on social media that medical workers had died from the disease in some hospitals in Kigali in the past few days.


Marburg is a disease that spreads through contact with the blood and tissues of infected individuals. Its symptoms include high fever, headache, vomiting, and nausea.
