Rwanda Reinforces Rebels as FARDC Fights Back in Eastern DRC, Kinshasa Reports

FARDC fights to reclaim key areas in eastern DRC amid rebel reinforcements from Rwanda, ensuring national security and territorial integrity.

The situation in the eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo remains intense as military operations continue to shift. The Congolese army (FARDC) is actively responding to enemy attacks, especially in the Masisi and Walikale territories. However, the rebels have received reinforcements, including advanced technology and additional troops from Rwanda, further escalating the conflict.

According to the government in Kinshasa, these reinforcements have been identified on multiple operational fronts in Masisi and Nyiragongo.

In a high-level meeting held on Thursday, the Congolese government emphasized that, despite this challenge, the national army has launched counter-offensive actions that have led to the recapture of several key locations. FARDC remains focused on regaining lost territories and ensuring national security.

In North Kivu, a significant battle took place in the Ndoluma area of Lubero territory on December 28, 2024, where several M23/RDF fighters were neutralized. Between January 7 and January 12, 2025, Congolese forces successfully reclaimed the town of Luofu after fierce clashes.

Meanwhile, in Masisi and Walikale territories, FARDC continues to fight with determination to prevent enemy expansion, despite the influx of advanced military equipment and personnel from Rwanda. Additionally, in Nyiragongo, FARDC, along with local defense groups (VDP), is resisting enemy forces in areas such as Kibumba and the Virunga National Park.

In South Kivu, the Congolese army made notable gains on January 12, reclaiming several towns previously occupied by the enemy forces, including Lumbishi, Ruzitanka, Kamatale, and Kabingo. Government forces are also targeting armed groups like Twirwanero and Red Tabara, which are reportedly supported by Rwandan aggressors in the Fizi and Mwenga regions.

Further north, in Ituri province, military operations remain on high alert as FARDC continues its mission to eliminate militia groups such as CODECO and ADF/MTM. The government has reiterated its commitment to stabilizing the region and eliminating these threats.

Beyond the eastern part of the country, military operations are also ongoing in the west. The Congolese army is actively engaged in "Operation Ngemba," which aims to neutralize the Mobondo insurgents operating in the Kongo Central, Kinshasa, and Grand Bandundu regions. On the Kwamouth-Bagata axis, 12 Mobondo fighters were eliminated between January 1 and January 7, 2025. The primary objective is to destroy the Mobondo base in Popokabaka, near the Kongo-Central border.

Overall, Kinshasa has reaffirmed that FARDC is committed to restoring peace, reclaiming lost territories, and ensuring the Democratic Republic of the Congo’s territorial integrity. The government continues to support military efforts to counter all threats and bring stability to the nation.
