President Ruto backs Raila Odinga's bid for AU Chair
NAIROBI, Kenya, Dec 7 - President William Ruto has expressed strong support for Raila Odinga's bid to lead the African Union Commission (AUC), describing him as the best candidate for the position.
Speaking at the East Africa Community Inter-Parliamentary Games in Mombasa, Ruto highlighted Raila's
extensive experience and capabilities, making him an ideal leader for the Addis Ababa-based organization.
“I ask you as East Africans that we stand united behind the candidature of our former Prime Minister Raila Odinga so that he can provide the leadership of this continent that is so much desirous to take our continent to the next level,” Ruto said.
The election for the new African Union Chairperson is set for February 2025, as the term of current chair Moussa Faki comes to an end. Raila is up against Djibouti’s Foreign Minister Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, who has served in the role since 2005, and Richard Randriamandrato of Madagascar.
Raila has been actively seeking support from African Heads of State to strengthen his campaign. His efforts have already secured endorsements, including the most recent from Eritrean President Isaias Afwerki.
To bolster Raila’s chances, President Ruto has committed state resources, aiming to ensure the former Prime Minister succeeds in his quest to lead the continental body.
