Tshisekedi declines Nairobi summit

In the middle of the ongoing tensions in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), Kenyan President William Ruto, who also chairs the East African Community (EAC), announced a planned meeting between DRC President Félix Tshisekedi and Rwandan President Paul Kagame.

The meeting was scheduled for Wednesday, January 29, 2025, to discuss the security crisis affecting the region.

Ruto emphasized the importance of this dialogue, hoping it could help de-escalate the conflict that has severe humanitarian and economic impacts not only on the DRC but also on the entire Great Lakes region.

High-Stakes Diplomatic Efforts

The proposed meeting between Tshisekedi and Kagame was seen as a potential opportunity to revive dialogue between the two nations. However, relations between Kinshasa and Kigali remain strained due to deep-rooted distrust and mutual accusations.

William Ruto, in his mediation efforts, highlighted the need for a peaceful resolution, stating that stability in eastern DRC is crucial for the entire Great Lakes region. Many observers believed the meeting could serve as a stepping stone toward a diplomatic solution.

Tshisekedi Rejects the Meeting

Despite the invitation, President Félix Tshisekedi ultimately decided not to attend the Nairobi summit. His spokesperson, Tina Salama, confirmed the decision, explaining that given the current security situation, the president would not travel to Kenya for the talks.

While Tshisekedi acknowledged the efforts of the EAC leaders, his government remains committed to the ongoing Luanda peace process. This decision reflects Kinshasa’s preference for a different diplomatic approach to addressing the crisis.

With tensions still high and violence persisting, the region awaits further developments on how peace efforts will unfold.
