Fom Daniel Chollom, now a former member of the Labour Party in the House of Representatives
Fom Daniel Chollom, a member of the Labour Party in the House of Representatives, has announced his decision to join the All Progressives Congress (APC). Chollom explained his move was influenced by internal challenges within his former party and his desire to support the President in advancing national development.
During a plenary session, Speaker Abbas Tajudeen read Chollom’s letter of defection. In the letter, Chollom pointed to leadership disputes in the Labour Party, which he said made it difficult for him to align with any faction and effectively represent his constituents. He emphasized that joining the APC would allow him to better serve the people who elected him.
While expressing his gratitude to the Labour Party for the opportunity to secure his position in the House, Chollom stated that the decision to defect was based on his commitment to delivering democratic benefits to Nigerians.
Criticism from Minority Leaders
Minority Leader Kingsley Chinda condemned Chollom’s defection, arguing that it did not follow proper procedures. Chinda stated that Chollom should have first resigned from the Labour Party at the ward level and presented evidence to the House before defecting. He also urged the House to declare Chollom’s seat vacant.
Deputy Minority Whip George Ozodinobi criticized Labour Party defectors, accusing them of lacking ideological commitment. He argued that their actions undermine the Labour Party’s credibility and deny the House quality representation.
Ozodinobi remarked, “It is disheartening that these members defect when there is no legitimate crisis in the Labour Party. Their actions are disappointing, and even the APC should be wary of trusting them.” He reiterated his call for Chollom’s seat to be declared vacant and pledged to take further steps to ensure this happens.
