Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka has defended the Azimio coalition, stating they are not to blame for delays in reconstituting the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC).
Speaking on Sunday, Kalonzo confirmed Azimio had submitted their nominee for the IEBC selection panel within the required timeframe.
“When Azimio was given 48 hours to forward the name of the candidate that will be in the panel that will constitute the IEBC, we gave the name of Dr. Koki Muli but there are people who are afraid of her abilities and they want to get user-friendly candidates,” he said.
Kalonzo criticized those obstructing the process through court orders, calling on President William Ruto to address the situation urgently.
“Everybody is concerned about this IEBC matter. William Ruto should come out of the slumber and do something. The country is waiting for him. The fellows who have gone to court are known to the state, tell them to withdraw the case and name within one week the panel, and in the next few months we should have an IEBC,” he added.
This follows remarks by Supreme Court Judge Isaac Lenaola, who accused the opposition of stalling progress, and Deputy President Kithure Kindiki, who urged unresolved parties to finalize their representative nominations.
“It is not good for a country with a vibrant democracy like Kenya to stay for such a long time without a functional IEBC,” Kindiki emphasized.
He also encouraged those with court cases to consider out-of-court settlements to expedite the process.
