The International Criminal Court (ICC) is set to launch a fresh investigation into a series of alleged crimes in the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
The chief prosecutor of the CPI, Karim Khan, said that the investigations to be carried out on Congo will mainly focus on the alleged crimes committed in the province of North Kivu since 2022 by M23 rebel groups supported by Rwanda. Khan emphasized that the probe aims to uncover the roles played by various authorities.
He also highlighted that the conflict in Congo has been under the ICC's radar since 2002, but the situation has escalated, prompting a renewed investigative effort.
This renewed investigation comes following a request from the Congolese government in May 2023, urging the ICC to thoroughly investigate the alleged looting of mineral resources by Rwandan defense forces and its terrorist rebels of M23 in the eastern DRC, meaning The investigation is about to draw attention to Paul Kagame's administration as they the are the central role in these allegations. source (Reuters)
