ICC Prosecutor gives strong warning to Warlords in the DRC

The President of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), Félix Tshisekedi, met with International Criminal Court (ICC) prosecutor Karim Khan in Kinshasa. Their discussion focused on the ongoing violence in the eastern part of the country.
Karim Khan, who was in the DRC for a three-day visit, sent a strong warning to warlords, militias, and their supporters. He made it clear that those responsible for crimes will be brought to justice. He also stressed that justice is a right for everyone and that no one should escape accountability for violent actions.
The situation in eastern DRC has become more serious, with the M23 rebel group expanding its control. M23, which has support from Rwanda, has taken over key areas, including Goma, the largest city in eastern DRC. They have also occupied the capitals of North Kivu and South Kivu provinces.
The rebel group is forcing civilians and police officers to join them. Because of the violence, thousands of people have fled to Burundi. Many have attempted to cross the Rusizi River, but sadly, more than 20 people have drowned.
The ICC has been investigating crimes in the DRC since 2002. In October 2024, it decided to focus more on crimes committed in North Kivu from January 2022 onwards. Khan stressed that no armed group or military force is allowed to commit crimes without consequences. He urged them to follow international law or be ready to face justice.
During his visit, Khan also spoke with President Tshisekedi, who promised to hold an international conference in April 2025. The aim of the meeting will be to find lasting peace and ensure justice for victims.
With the ICC increasing its efforts, armed groups and warlords in the DRC are now being warned: they will be held accountable for their crimes.
