Former Ghanaian President John Agyekum Kufour recently expressed his opinion that the decision of four parliamentary candidates to run independently in the 2024 election does not constitute "cross-carpeting." He argued that since their decision impacts the next parliament rather than the current one, it should not have led to the ongoing parliamentary standoff in Ghana.

“For me, the four people who have decided to go independent do not amount to cross-carpeting. Their decision does not affect the current Parliament but rather the next parliament after this one,” Kufour stated.

He further explained that he doesn’t understand why the issue has escalated to the Supreme Court, especially since the Speaker of Parliament has not made a formal ruling on it. He urged that Parliament should return to its prior state, allowing it to complete its current term effectively.

Kufour emphasized that with the upcoming election, Ghanaians will soon have the opportunity to choose their preferred leaders in Parliament, making these political maneuvers unnecessary.

He encouraged the Speaker to clarify that no official ruling or declaration has been made, suggesting that this would allow the nation’s business to proceed smoothly, including any presidential addresses or bill approvals.
