Yahaya Bello, the former governor of Kogi State, along with two others, appeared in court on Wednesday. They all pleaded not guilty to 16 charges brought by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

Bello, the first defendant, strongly denied the accusations during the session overseen by Justice Maryann Anenih. His lawyer, JB Daudu (SAN), requested bail for him. However, EFCC lawyer Kemi Pinheiro opposed the request, arguing it was no longer valid.

Daudu clarified that the relevant bail motion was filed on November 22, supported by affidavits and a written statement. Referring to a court document as "Exhibit A," he said Bello’s court appearance showed his respect for the law.

The EFCC wanted the trial to begin immediately, even ready to call its first witness. However, Bello’s lawyer objected, saying they were served the charges late at night on November 26 and needed time to prepare.
