In response to the growing influence of the M23 rebel group on social media, the government of the Democratic Republic of Congo has intensified its internet oversight. This crackdown has led to difficulties for many Congolese in accessing social media platforms like TikTok and X (formerly Twitter), especially after the Goma attack where several Twitter accounts promoted pro-M23 messages.
Since February 1st, there have been widespread reports from Congolese citizens about being unable to access these platforms. Additionally, authorities have gone a step further by entirely blocking access to the App Store and Google Play Store, complicating the download of VPN apps that could circumvent such censorship.
This move highlights the government's determination to eliminate any tools that allow free access to information and social media. Despite the significant implications of these restrictions, there has been no official communication from the authorities, telecommunications operators, or the affected social media platforms as of yet.
Their silence stands in stark contrast to their frequent threats to block access to TikTok, which they blame for corrupting the nation’s morals, and to Twitter, which they view as a vehicle for spreading M23's messages.
Since the M23's recent aggressive actions in Goma, there has been an evident increase in the use of fake online accounts to support the group, prompting the government to tighten its grip on the internet and social media.
These new measures not only mark a more severe phase of internet control in the Congo but also raise serious concerns about freedom of expression in the country, potentially leading to strong criticism amid an ongoing severe security crisis in the eastern region.
