African Court Set to Begin Trial Against Rwanda Over Human Rights Abuses in DRC

The African Court on Human and Peoples' Rights, based in Arusha, Tanzania, has confirmed that it will begin the trial against Rwanda on February 12, 2025. This trial follows a complaint filed by the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) in September 2023, accusing Rwanda of committing severe human rights abuses in the eastern part of the DRC.

The news about this trial was announced at the 28th meeting of the Council of Ministers in Mbuji-Mayi. During this meeting, the Minister of State for Justice, Constant Mutamba, provided a detailed report, emphasizing that this legal action marks a significant step in the DRC's pursuit of justice and human rights. It is seen as a boost to the country's standing in the international community.

Other international courts are also taking action against Rwanda. The International Criminal Court (ICC) has reopened its investigation into Rwanda's crimes in Congo, and the East African Community (EAC) Court of Justice is pursuing its own legal case against Rwanda for violating the organization's treaty.

In response to Rwanda's aggression in eastern Congo, the Congolese government has implemented a strategy focused on four key areas: strengthening the military to defend the country’s borders, using diplomacy to gain international support and expose the aggression, raising awareness to fight misinformation, and using the judicial system to hold those responsible accountable and seek reparations.
