North Kivu: The army mission is difficult but not impossible says Masunzu

Lieutenant-General Pacifique Masunzu, the leader of the 3rd defense zone, officially took command on Monday, January 6, 2025. He called for discipline in the army as the region faces ongoing conflicts.

Speaking to representatives of officers from the third defense zone, the Commander emphasized that discipline, which he called the "mother" of armies, is essential to tackle the threats posed by armed groups like the ADF terrorists and the M23 rebellion.

“Our area of responsibility partly faces aggression from Rwanda, as well as the ADF terrorists in parts of Ituri province and Nord-Kivu,” he said. “In addition to these groups causing fear and destruction, Twirwaneho also operates in South Kivu, working with the M23 rebellion and Red Tabara from Burundi,” he added.

Lieutenant-General Masunzu acknowledged the mission is “difficult” and “not easy.” However, he stated, “It’s not impossible either.” He explained that their goal is to defend the country’s territorial integrity and protect its people and their property.

Lieutenant-General Pacifique Masunzu has replaced Lieutenant-General Marcel Mbangu Mashita as the Commander of the third defense zone.
