The Secretary General of the Central Organization of Trade Unions (COTU), Francis Atwoli, has commended President William Ruto for his recent Cabinet nominations, describing them as a step toward fostering unity and inclusivity in Kenya’s political landscape.
Atwoli praised the appointments of Mutahi Kagwe and former governors Lee Kinyanjui and William Kabogo, highlighting them as a sign of President Ruto’s commitment to national cohesion.
In a press release on Friday, Atwoli referred to the nominations as "a clear demonstration of President Ruto’s commitment to fostering political stability and national cohesion through the formation of a broad-based and inclusive government."
The COTU leader lauded Ruto’s approach of including both allies and former opponents in the Cabinet.
"By including individuals who supported him and even those who did not, the President has portrayed a great show of statesmanship that should be lauded and emulated," Atwoli remarked.
Atwoli emphasized that the diverse backgrounds of the appointees would improve decision-making by incorporating a range of ideas.
"We believe that the current calibre of individuals within the Cabinet will not only promote unity but also enrich decision-making processes through the contestation of ideas and thus ultimately addressing the challenges facing Kenyan workers and in advancing the socio-economic welfare of all Kenyans," he stated.
COTU expressed optimism that the newly nominated Cabinet Secretaries would prioritize the welfare of workers and the broader population.
"We look forward to engaging with the Cabinet in constructive social dialogue to ensure the dignity and welfare of workers are at the forefront of government priorities," the statement added.
On Thursday, President Ruto unveiled new Cabinet appointments, bringing back several seasoned politicians. Former Kiambu Governor William Kabogo has been nominated as Cabinet Secretary for Information, Communication, and the Digital Economy, succeeding Dr. Margaret Nyambura, who will become Kenya's High Commissioner to Ghana.
Mutahi Kagwe, a former Health Cabinet Secretary, has been nominated as Cabinet Secretary for Agriculture, replacing Dr. Andrew Karanja, who is set to serve as Kenya's Ambassador to Brazil.
Additionally, former Nakuru Governor Lee Kinyanjui will take over the Ministry of Investment, Trade, and Industry from Salim Mvurya, who has been reassigned to the Sports Ministry. This change follows the appointment of Kipchumba Murkomen as the Interior Cabinet Secretary.
