Hon. Ssemujju highlights Karamoja’s ongoing struggles with low electricity access, poor sanitation, and minimal contribution to Uganda’s GDP

Today, April 26, 2025, while speaking on Capital FM Uganda, Hon. Ibrahim Ssemujju Nganda raised serious concerns about the slow development in the Karamoja sub-region.

Referring to the latest report from the Uganda Bureau of Statistics (UBOS), Hon. Ssemujju explained that only 6% of people in Karamoja have access to electricity. He also pointed out that many residents still live in small, single-room houses and continue to practice open defecation because proper toilets are missing.

According to the 2024 UBOS census, about 60.2% of Karamoja’s population does not have access to toilets. This lack of sanitation increases public health risks and makes it harder to improve living conditions in the area.

Besides poor living standards, Karamoja also adds very little to Uganda’s national economy.

For better understanding, Gross Domestic Product (GDP) is the total money value of goods and services a country produces in a year. Karamoja’s contribution to Uganda’s GDP remains extremely low.

Hon. Ssemujju stressed that these problems have been going on for a long time and have not yet been fixed. His comments highlight how urgently the government needs to take strong actions to improve the lives of people in Karamoja.

The big question remains: Will the government finally solve Karamoja’s problems soon, or will these issues continue without change?
