Young Africans Sports Club (Yanga SC), the reigning champions of Tanzania's Mainland Premier League, are seeking compensation for costs incurred while preparing for their highly anticipated match against Simba SC. The fixture was unexpectedly postponed by the Tanzania Premier League Board (TPLB), a move Yanga claims violates league regulations.
Yanga's legal team is currently compiling detailed documentation to support their compensation claim. The club has also expressed its intention to escalate the matter to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) if both TPLB and the Tanzania Football Federation (TFF) do not address their grievances satisfactorily.
An emergency meeting of Yanga's Executive Committee was convened to discuss the match's cancellation, which was scheduled for March 8, 2025, at Benjamin Mkapa Stadium. A source from the club emphasized their commitment to protecting Yanga's interests, stating,
"We have been given a mandate by our members and fans to safeguard the club’s welfare. We will not tolerate any sabotage against Yanga and will fight until justice is served."
The club highlighted the significant expenses involved in preparing for such a high-profile match and questioned the legitimacy of the postponement, suggesting potential ulterior motives. Yanga has also publicly declared a loss of confidence in the Premier League Committee's leadership, calling on TFF to appoint new, impartial officials to ensure fairness in Tanzanian football.
In their official statement, Yanga detailed their compliance with all pre-match protocols, including attending the Match Coordination Meeting (MCM) on March 7, 2025. They accused Simba SC of attempting to conduct an unauthorized pre-match training session at Benjamin Mkapa Stadium without following the required procedures.
Yanga has firmly stated that they will not participate in any rescheduled fixture for the postponed match, regardless of the new date. The club has also extended sympathies to their members, fans, and stakeholders who had traveled from various locations to witness the derby, urging them to remain calm as the situation unfolds.
