Moshi – The ruling party, Chama Cha Mapinduzi (CCM), has expelled Reverend Godfrey Malisa over claims that he violated the party’s constitution and ethical rules.

Malisa was removed from the party after openly opposing resolutions made during CCM’s National Congress on January 19, 2025.

At the Congress, party delegates officially endorsed President Samia Suluhu Hassan and President Hussein Ali Hassan Mwinyi as their candidates for the upcoming Union and Zanzibar presidential elections.

However, Malisa criticized this endorsement, arguing that the decision was unconstitutional.

On Monday, February 10, 2025, the CCM Kilimanjaro Regional Secretary, Merce Mollel, announced that the party’s Regional Executive Committee had decided to expel Malisa. This decision was reached in a meeting held the same day.

“We held a meeting with the CCM Regional Executive Committee in Kilimanjaro, and among the matters discussed, we resolved to expel Dr. Godfrey Malisa from the party,” Mollel stated.

According to Mollel, Malisa’s actions went against the party’s ethical principles, especially since he openly opposed decisions made by the National Congress.

“After the Congress, Malisa made statements that threatened the party’s unity and stability. He even alleged that the meeting had violated CCM’s constitution,” Mollel added.

He further explained that CCM’s ethical guidelines, specifically Section 6, Subsection 3, outline the conduct expected from members. Malisa’s remarks were considered inappropriate, leading to his expulsion.

“Malisa claims to be a senior CCM member, but the Executive Committee does not recognize him as such. He only joined the party in 2020, and we were still guiding him through party structures,” Mollel clarified.

The endorsement of President Samia and President Mwinyi is widely seen as a strategy to strengthen CCM’s leadership before the general elections later this year.
