Man City, Tottenham, and Aston Villa face tough decisions on UEFA squad registration as they struggle to fit new signings into their European competition rosters.

Manchester City, Tottenham Hotspur, and Aston Villa have problems registering new players for European tournaments after the January transfer window.

UEFA rules say that teams can only add three new players to their knockout stage squad from their league phase squad. The deadline for submission is midnight on Thursday, February 6.

Manchester City spent £176.1 million on four new players: Nico Gonzalez, Abdukodir Khusanov, Vitor Reis, and Omar Marmoush. However, City did not release enough players from their List A squad to make room for all four. So, Pep Guardiola must leave two out of the Champions League squad.

Aston Villa signed five players, including a high-profile loan deal for Marcus Rashford from Manchester United. They also brought in Donyell Malen, Andres Garcia, Marco Asensio, and Axel Disasi. Since Villa released six players from their List A squad, they can register four out of five new signings. However, one player must be left out.

Tottenham’s problem is different. At the start of the season, they did not meet UEFA’s homegrown player quota. They only had two locally trained players, Brandon Austin and Alfie Whiteman, but needed at least four. Because of this, they had to register only 23 players for the Europa League phase. This meant Djed Spence and Sergio Reguilon were left out.

Now, Spurs can only add three new players from their January signings—Kevin Danso, Antonin Kinsky, and Mathys Tel. But since their 23-player squad is full, they must remove three existing players to register the new ones.
