DRC Stadium Crisis: Workers Remove Goalposts Over Unpaid Salaries
Workers at Stade des Martyrs in DRC remove goalposts and nets in protest over nine months of unpaid salaries, risking major match disruptions.
Workers at Stade des Martyrs in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) have removed the stadium’s goalposts and taken away the nets after going nine months without pay.
The protest happened on Friday, March 7, 2025, just one day after two major matches in the Congolese football league. The workers also cut off electricity and water supplies to the stadium to show their frustration.
A tweet from @mbotecd showed the workers digging up the goalposts, with the caption: “
Strike at Stade des Martyrs: Agents have dug up the goalposts of the annex field and inside the stadium to demand 9 months of unpaid salaries.”
The strike could disrupt upcoming matches scheduled for the weekend, as reported by various media outlets in the country.
The Ministry of Sports and Entertainment in the DRC is expected to address the workers’ actions soon, according to Voice of Congo.
This comes at a critical time, as Stade des Martyrs is set to host important matches, including the national team’s World Cup qualifier against South Sudan on March 21, 2025.
