Why You Should Stop Using Social Media for Personal Validation louis Buyisiwe Oct 30, 2024 Facebook X (Twitter) WhatsApp Copy link Popular social media platform icons in a 3D style, featuring Facebook, Twitter, WhatsApp, Pinterest, Snapchat, Instagram, YouTube, TikTok, Spotify, and LinkedIn The Trap of Seeking Validation Social media promises us connection and interactions – but more often the case, it makes one feel worse about themselves and their life- an internal self. The chain of validation-seeking feels good, but it must be conquered for the right reasons. Here’s why it’s important to avoid the trap of validation on facebook, and twitter and constantly scrolling. The Hidden Struggle It’s part of our innate nature, as human beings, to desire acceptance and approval, however on social media this fragile need is increase to the degree where our happiness and state of mind is dependent on the number of likes, comments, and shares of the posts. The more people stare at their cells and observe their posts, the more pleasure they will be able to receive and the opposite with silence. This pressure – of striving to be one person while being presented with someone else`s ideal composition on social media – can be, in most cases, very recognizably tiresome. Why Social Media Validation is So Addictive After all, I may be empty, but at least I have views. There’s always that little high in grabbing one more follower, which is what constantly draws us in. And as for the sites, that’s just exactly what they were built for. They establish a habit called “intermittent reinforcement,” in which likes and comments become variable rewards that consistently repeat, and in addition they create expectations that validate new posts and photos. But when approval is consistently not forthcoming, it can begin to erode one's sense of self. Understanding the Consequences There is an epiphany that many individuals undergo and in most cases, it is inexplicably so. It could be the let-down one feels after a particular post fails to attract views or the realization that there is too much thought put in the future course of posts. This realization is gut-wrenching particularly when one fancies that their online engagements is the defining aspect of their joy. The Pursuit of Verbal or Vocal Validation in Social Media as a Lose-Win Situation The price one pays for social media in terms of seeking approval is not only a handful of unhelpful updates, It is something worse. The demands of getting that picture just has to be right, invites every social situation that one sees through the dimensions of the perfect picture and not the picture itself, according to three simple stardom signals. One such picture stealing aspect is a happy picture and this easy equation pushes individuals to constantly aspire and wish for something that they do not possess hence condemning them to darkness. The Genuine Treasure: Realization of the Self When we give up the quest of seeking appreciation through social media, we can now concentrate on that which gives us real happiness. Often, it is not so much of a big deal—dinner with family, accomplishing something, or just moments spent in a still environment where it is not necessary to have an audience in order to derive satisfaction from the activity itself. Walking Away from Social Media In Short: Social media is a tool, and not a mirror with which one should judge oneself. The biggest prize is in the ability to look within one’s mind and emotions instead of wasting time in social networks. By looking at the social networks less, we can restore our time, self-esteem, and emotional wellbeing and see the world through our own eyes rather than through a filter. - Safest Cookware Materials for Health: A Comprehensive Guide | Xtrafrica
Safest Cookware Materials for Health: A Comprehensive Guide Dr.Martin Aug 9, 2024 Facebook X (Twitter) WhatsApp Copy link A sleek stainless steel pan on a modern glass-ceramic stove Choosing the right cookware is crucial not only for culinary success but also for maintaining a healthy lifestyle. The materials used in your pots and pans can have a significant impact on your food and health, with some materials being safer than others. Understanding the pros and cons of various cookware options can help you make informed decisions that align with your health goals and cooking preferences. Here, we break down the benefits and drawbacks of popular cookware materials, guiding you towards the safest options for your kitchen. 1. Ceramic Cookware Ceramic cookware, made from kiln-baked clay, offers natural non-stick properties and is non-toxic. This durable and eco-friendly option can last for decades with proper care. However, it may require some oil to prevent sticking, and labels like "100% ceramic" and "ceramic-coated" are not FDA regulated, making it challenging to find genuine 100% ceramic cookware. Brands like Greenpan and Caraway provide good options for ceramic-coated cookware. 2. Stainless Steel Cookware Stainless steel cookware, popular for decades, is made from a metal alloy containing nickel and chromium. This dishwasher-safe, long-lasting option cleans easily with a bit of oil. However, high-quality sets can be expensive, and the lack of a non-stick surface requires adjustment. Additionally, acidic foods may cause leaching, which is a concern when cooking with stainless steel. For high-quality stainless steel, consider 360 Stainless Steel. 3. Cast Iron Cookware Cast iron cookware, known for its excellent heat retention and distribution, has been used for centuries. Properly seasoned and maintained cast iron can become virtually non-stick and is highly durable. It does, however, require regular maintenance and seasoning, and is not ideal for cooking acidic foods. There's also a potential for iron leaching, which can be a concern for individuals with iron overload. Lodge Cast Iron is a reliable brand for affordable cast iron cookware. 4. Copper Cookware Copper cookware, favored by many professional chefs, conducts heat quickly and evenly. Often lined with tin, it provides a non-stick surface without chemical coatings. However, copper cookware is very expensive and can lose heat rapidly when removed from the stove. Pure copper can pose health risks, so it's safer to use lined versions. Mauviel offers high-quality copper cookware. 5. Hybrid Nonstick Cookware The newest option, hybrid nonstick cookware, combines various materials for versatility and durability. This affordable option offers non-stick properties with stronger, longer-lasting coatings. However, some hybrid cookware may contain chemicals like PTFE, posing potential health risks. Hex-Clad is a leading brand in this category. Best Non-Toxic Cookware Brands Investing in quality cookware is worthwhile for health and longevity. Here are some top picks: For budget-friendly ceramic-coated cookware, Greenpan and Caraway are excellent choices. For high-quality stainless steel, 360 Stainless Steel is recommended. Lodge offers affordable cast iron cookware, while Mauviel provides beautiful copper options. For innovative hybrid cookware, Hex-Clad is a great option. Cookware Materials to Avoid While most modern cookware is safe if used properly, it is advisable to avoid damaged or scratched nonstick cookware, vintage nonstick cookware made before 2013, cooking acidic foods in aluminum cookware, and using iron pots and pans if you have iron overload. Do your research to find the best cookware for your needs and budget. Investing in safe, non-toxic cookware is a step towards a healthier kitchen and lifestyle. Yoga at the Office Can Help Reduce Heart Disease Risk, New Study Finds Dr Chris Mug Sep 18, 2024 Facebook X (Twitter) WhatsApp Copy link Boost productivity and well-being with yoga at the office. A peaceful workspace designed for both work and relaxation. A recent study has revealed that practicing yoga in the workplace can significantly reduce the risk of heart disease among employees. With work-related stress being identified as one of the leading causes of heart disease, researchers are urging employers to incorporate wellness activities, like yoga, into office routines. Work Stress and Heart Disease: A Growing Concern According to health experts, employees experiencing high levels of work-related stress are 50% more likely to develop coronary heart disease compared to those with less stress. This alarming statistic underscores the importance of stress management in the workplace. The study highlights yoga as a powerful tool in combating this issue. Yoga: More Effective Than Other Stress-Relief Methods The researchers compared various stress-relief techniques, such as massage therapy, progressive muscle relaxation, and yoga. The findings were clear: yoga outperformed the other methods in reducing occupational stress and promoting overall well-being. Unlike massage, which offers temporary relief, yoga provides long-term benefits by improving both mental and physical health. Why Employers Should Take Action With workplace stress contributing heavily to heart disease, the study encourages employers to integrate yoga into their wellness programs. Simple yoga sessions during breaks or at the end of the day can have profound effects on employees' health, potentially reducing healthcare costs and improving productivity. - Vegetarians Have Lower Cancer Risk Than Meat-Eaters: Oxford research | Xtrafrica
Vegetarians Have Lower Cancer Risk Than Meat-Eaters: Oxford research Dr Chris Mug Aug 26, 2024 Facebook X (Twitter) WhatsApp Copy link A colorful spread of veggies, avocado, and wholesome grains is the perfect balance of taste and nutrition A new study from Oxford University suggests that vegetarians have a 14% lower risk of developing cancer compared to regular meat-eaters. Drawing on data from over 470,000 participants, the research also indicates that pescatarians—those who eat fish but no other meat—had a 10% lower cancer risk when compared to people who consume meat regularly. The study defined regular meat-eaters as individuals who ate meat more than five times per week. The findings revealed that reducing meat consumption, or adopting a vegetarian or pescatarian diet, was linked to a lower risk of cancer across all cancer types. However, the researchers caution that the study does not definitively prove that meat consumption increases cancer risk. Factors such as smoking and body fat may also contribute to the observed differences in cancer risk. The Oxford study underscores the complex relationship between diet and health outcomes, suggesting that other lifestyle factors should be considered when evaluating cancer risk. Despite the findings, the authors emphasize that further research is needed to explore the connections between diet, lifestyle, and cancer. - 4 Simple Tricks to Get Rid of Ants in Your Home | Xtrafrica
4 Simple Tricks to Get Rid of Ants in Your Home louis Buyisiwe Sep 15, 2024 Facebook X (Twitter) WhatsApp Copy link Ants infestation inside a home, showing how these pests are attracted to everyday objects Dealing with ants can be a real nuisance, but with these four easy tricks, you can eliminate them for good. Follow these steps to keep your home ant-free. Keep Your Kitchen Spotless Ants are drawn to food crumbs and spills, especially sugary or sticky items. To prevent them from invading your kitchen, make sure to clean up any messes immediately. Wipe down counters, sweep floors, and store food in airtight containers to reduce the chance of ants finding a food source. Use Safe Ant Sprays or DIY Solutions While commercial ant sprays can be effective, many contain harsh chemicals. A safer alternative is a homemade solution of dish detergent and water. This mixture works by suffocating ants on contact and is less harmful to your home environment. Simply spray it on any ant trails or directly on the insects themselves. Set Ant Baits Near Entry Points Baiting is a powerful way to control ants. Place commercial ant baits like Terro near the ants' entry points, or make your own using a mixture of Borax and sugar. The bait will attract ants, which then carry it back to their colony, helping to eliminate the infestation at the source. Seal Gaps and Cracks Closing off entry points is crucial to keeping ants out for good. Inspect your home for gaps, cracks, and holes around windows, doors, and baseboards. Use caulk or weather stripping to seal these areas and prevent ants from finding their way inside. - South Sudan starts cholera vaccination campaign | Xtrafrica
South Sudan starts cholera vaccination campaign Chinedu Bruce Jan 4, 2025 Facebook X (Twitter) WhatsApp Copy link Juba, South Sudan – South Sudan has received over 1.1 million oral cholera vaccine doses to launch a campaign aimed at vaccinating more than 80% of its population. However, the effort faces challenges like poor access to areas with the worst outbreaks. Health workers plan to vaccinate around 9 million people, focusing on children and mothers. The vaccines, which arrived in Juba, will be sent to hotspots like Bentiu next week. The Ministry of Health recently reported 199 deaths and 13,000 cholera cases. Dr. Gabriel Boum Tap, a UNICEF immunization officer, noted that previous vaccine supplies were insufficient due to limited production and distribution challenges. Cholera cases have been recorded in 29 of South Sudan's 79 counties, with Bentiu, Renk, and Juba being the hardest hit. The first case was reported on September 23 in Renk. The vaccination campaign faces difficulties, including limited access to healthcare facilities. Thinjin Khoat, a cholera survivor, described witnessing a child die from dehydration because health workers couldn't provide treatment in time. Many communities struggle to access care due to flooding and security concerns, especially in Bentiu. Cholera, caused by consuming contaminated food or water, can kill within hours if untreated. According to Doctors Without Borders (MSF), poor living conditions in South Sudan have worsened the outbreak. Stephanie Ngai, an MSF coordinator in Bentiu, said the outbreak quickly overwhelmed local response systems, which lack sufficient funding and coordination. The vaccination campaign, supported by partners like MSF and the World Health Organization (WHO), is set to begin on Monday. In Rubkona, WHO will focus on hard-to-reach areas affected by flooding, while MSF will cover camps and towns nearby. The campaign targets children aged one and above. WHO estimates that cholera kills 143,000 people globally each year out of about 4 million cases. - Urgent Action Needed to Fight Antimicrobial Resistance in Africa | Xtrafrica
Urgent Action Needed to Fight Antimicrobial Resistance in Africa Dr.Martin Nov 25, 2024 Facebook X (Twitter) WhatsApp Copy link Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is becoming a serious threat in Africa. Without urgent action, it could cause 4.1 million deaths every year by 2050, disrupting healthcare and the economy. The World Health Organization (WHO) in the African Region has created a Regional Strategy for AMR 2023–2030 , helping all 47 member countries develop National Action Plans. So far, 38 of these plans have been approved by national governments. Challenges like limited funding, not enough skilled workers, and weak systems to monitor AMR make the fight difficult. The regional strategy focuses on: Supporting teamwork between different sectors. Improving diagnosis. Creating strong programs to ensure antimicrobials are used wisely. Raising awareness about responsible antimicrobial use. Currently, 43 African countries are part of WHO’s Global AMR Surveillance System (GLASS) . WHO is helping countries improve lab capacities, monitor antimicrobial use, and make decisions based on data. WHO has also introduced an Antimicrobial Stewardship Training Package in countries like the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Ghana, Nigeria, and Zambia. This program trains health workers to use antimicrobials responsibly, slowing the spread of resistance. This year’s World AMR Awareness Week is themed “Educate. Advocate. Act Now” , encouraging global awareness and promoting best practices to fight AMR. “AMR is not only a medical challenge but a broad issue that affects all of society. Africa cannot afford to ignore this threat, but through collaboration, we can reduce its impact and protect public health,” said Dr. Matshidiso Moeti, WHO Regional Director for Africa. WHO and its partners are also working to increase awareness among health workers, leaders, and the public. For example, youth programs in Nigeria have trained hundreds of young people to educate communities about the importance of using antimicrobials responsibly. AMR happens when bacteria, viruses, and other pathogens adapt, making treatments less effective. This makes diseases harder to treat. In 2019 alone, AMR was linked to 1.27 million deaths in sub-Saharan Africa. Overusing and misusing antimicrobials in healthcare, farming, and even waste management also contribute to the problem. Recognizing how human, animal, and environmental health are connected, WHO promotes a One Health approach , which is active in 41 African countries. To strengthen health systems and balance the need for essential medicines with antimicrobial stewardship, more funding is essential. WHO, in partnership with organizations like Africa Centres for Disease Control, is working to increase political support and funding to ensure AMR efforts reach even the most remote populations. What Are Antimicrobials? Antimicrobials meaning An antimicrobial is a substance that kills or stops the growth of microorganisms, which include bacteria, viruses, fungi, and parasites. These agents are essential in treating infections and preventing the spread of diseases. They can be classified based on the type of microorganism they target: Antibiotics : Target bacteria. Antivirals : Target viruses. Antifungals : Target fungi. Antiparasitics : Target parasites. Antimicrobials work by either killing the microorganisms directly or inhibiting their growth and reproduction. For example, antibiotics can prevent bacteria from building their cell walls, leading to their death It's important to use antimicrobials appropriately to prevent the development of antimicrobial resistance, where microorganisms evolve to withstand these treatments, making infections harder to treat. - How to Stay Healthy While Working at a Computer All Day | Xtrafrica
How to Stay Healthy While Working at a Computer All Day Dr Chris Mug Aug 27, 2024 Facebook X (Twitter) WhatsApp Copy link Enduring long work hours, a moment of relief through a much-needed stretch In today’s digital world, many of us spend long hours sitting at a desk, staring at a computer screen. Whether you work from home, in an office, or a hybrid environment, this sedentary lifestyle can lead to a range of health issues if not managed properly. Prolonged sitting, poor posture, and eye strain can all contribute to physical discomfort and long-term health problems. However, with some mindful adjustments to your daily routine, it’s possible to stay healthy, energized, and comfortable throughout your workday. Here are some essential tips to help you maintain your health while working at a computer every day. 1. Practice Good Posture Good posture is key to avoiding long-term health issues like neck and back pain, muscle strain, and fatigue. Make a conscious effort to sit up straight with your feet flat on the floor, shoulders relaxed, and your back supported. Proper posture can help improve balance and reduce strain on your body. 2. Invest in Ergonomic Furniture Consider investing in ergonomic furniture to make your workspace more comfortable. A standing desk can allow you to alternate between sitting and standing throughout the day, reducing the risk of sitting-related health issues. A chair with lumbar support will help maintain the natural curve of your spine, and a mouse pad with wrist support can reduce strain on your wrists. Adjust your computer screen so it's at eye level to avoid neck and eye strain. 3. Take Regular Breaks Sitting for long periods can cause stiffness and fatigue. To counteract this, make it a habit to take regular breaks. Every 30 minutes to an hour, stand up, walk around, or do some light stretching. This will not only keep your muscles active but also improve circulation and help reduce mental fatigue. 4. Choose Healthy Snacks The right snacks can keep your energy levels up and help you power through your workday. Opt for snacks that provide a balance of protein, healthy fats, and complex carbohydrates. For example, Greek yogurt with honey and berries is a great choice that provides sustained energy. Avoid sugary snacks, which can lead to energy crashes later in the day. By incorporating these healthy habits into your daily routine, you can improve your physical and mental well-being while working at a computer. Small changes can make a big difference in how you feel both at work and beyond. According to the USDA, lean meat refers to a three-and-a-half-ounce serving that contains less than 10 grams of fat and no more than 4.5 grams of saturated fat. These cuts provide high-quality protein, containing all nine essential amino acids your body needs but cannot produce on its own. Each type of meat offers unique nutritional benefits, supplying varying levels of iron, potassium, magnesium, and Vitamins like B12. Here’s how you can choose and cook the healthiest meats. What Are the Healthiest Meat Options? Chicken Breast : Known for its high protein and low fat, chicken breast is a versatile option. Choose leaner cooking methods : Grilling, roasting, and baking are excellent alternatives to frying, as they eliminate the need for extra oil and reduce added fats. Marinate smartly : If you’re watching your sodium levels, use herbs like rosemary, thyme, or garlic in place of salt-heavy marinades. This will enhance flavor without the excess sodium. Pairing Your Meat with Healthy Sides The sides you serve with your meat can make or break a healthy meal. For a nutrient-dense plate, try pairing your meat with: Roasted vegetables : Rich in fiber and vitamins. Salads : Choose dark leafy greens for added nutrients. Whole grains : Rice, quinoa, or barley are excellent choices to provide lasting energy. The most appealing part? You would actually find it easier than you imagine! The following are four easy steps you can take to help the environment through what you eat: 1.Eat Locally and Seasonally Eating seasonally and eating what is grown nearer to you than far away farms lowers the amount of fossil fuel burnt in transporting produce over long distances. When you buy food from locals, you help in boosting the local businesses. 2.Avoid Ultra-Processed Foods food that has undergone industrial transformation multiple times is termed ultra-processed and from the studies done, these have a more destructive effect on nature. Consumption of such foods is associated with large packaging enough production energy is utilized in the packaging amongst other things. Prefer whole or minimally processed ingredients as the way forward in streamlining the diet without carbon diet. 3.Reduce Meat Consumption Meat is one of the risks since the planning, feeding, and housing of animals is resource costly. You can avoid your meat consumption to a great degree by embracing more plant-based recipes. You can try out something different that doesn’t compromise on your morals - vegetarian or even vegan options. 4.You can buy in bulk.
