  • Mbalula Warns Against the US Isolation of South Africa from Africa

Fikile Mbalula warns against South Africa being isolated from Africa, calls for unity, trade, and ANC renewal. African National Congress (ANC) secretary-general Fikile Mbalula has warned against allowing the United States, under President Donald Trump, to isolate South Africa from the rest of the African continent, calling instead for collective resistance and stronger intra-African cooperation, according to News24. Addressing delegates on the final day of the 27th ANC Youth League (ANCYL) national congress at the University of Limpopo , Mbalula urged African countries to stand with South Africa rather than leaving it to confront geopolitical pressure alone. “South Africa must not fight alone. It must fight with the rest of the African continent. It must never accept to be isolated from the rest of the African continent,” Mbalula said. He added: “We must not allow Donald Trump to isolate us from the African continent. We must fight as the African continent for our own African Renaissance.” Mbalula emphasised that the African Renaissance remains a central political task, particularly for young leaders, and said it is inseparable from the expansion of intra-African trade. He called on African states to strengthen economic ties among themselves and reduce dependence on external powers. “African countries must trade among themselves. Africa must stop being beggars of others,” he said. “If we are so powerful, we will not be a walkover [for] the United States.” According to News24 , Mbalula also praised the ANCYL for successfully organising a peaceful and self-managed congress without direct assistance from the ANC, despite scepticism about its ability to do so. He said the congress demonstrated the league’s organisational maturity. He further commended the uncontested election of the youth league’s leadership, suggesting it offered lessons for the broader ANC as it works to overcome internal divisions. “Comrades, we wish you well, and we're very happy about this congress. It was a peaceful congress, not characterised by pettiness or factionalism, as we walk the path of renewal,” Mbalula said. Your integrity is non-negotiable,” he said. “The youth league must never be an organisation of another leader or another member. It must be an organ of the African National Congress.” He encouraged the youth league to speak out forcefully within the party, describing its role as one that challenges complacency and accelerates transformation. “And that's what we expect from the youth. If we, in the ANC, move more slowly, you must make us move fast. That is your role as the youth,” he said, while warning against confusing militancy with recklessness. “You must never fear speaking out, but always do so from a correct disposition. • Sanna Manjang Faces Gambia Court Martial for Desertion

Sanna Manjang faces a Gambian military court over alleged desertion in 2017. Here is how the case differs from his civilian trial. BANJUL, The Gambia — A General Court Martial has opened proceedings against former Gambian lieutenant colonel Sanna Manjang over an allegation that he deserted the armed forces in January 2017. The hearing began on 21 September 2026 at Fajara Barracks, according to accounts based on a Gambia Armed Forces statement. The desertion case is a military proceeding. It does not determine the separate allegations against Manjang in the High Court, and it does not amount to a conviction. Gambian military prosecutors allege that Manjang left his State Guards Battalion duty post in Banjul around 21 January 2017 and remained absent for nine years with the intention of deserting. The allegation must now be proved before the General Court Martial. What the military charge says The Gambia Journal's account of the military announcement says Manjang is charged under the Gambia Armed Forces Act. The alleged offence is desertion contrary to Section 53(1)(a), with the charge brought under the military-law framework cited by the armed forces. According to the stated particulars, Manjang allegedly left his post at the State Guards Battalion in Banjul on or about 21 January 2017. Prosecutors say the absence continued for nine years and was accompanied by an intention to desert. Both the prolonged absence and the alleged intention are matters for the tribunal to decide from the evidence. The hearing is taking place at the Senior Non-Commissioned Officers' Mess at the Guards Battalion in Fajara. Voice Gambia reported that Colonel Ousman Bah is president of the military panel and Justice Omar Cham is serving as judge advocate. The Director of Public Prosecutions or representatives from his office, assisted by military lawyers, are handling the prosecution. The military said Manjang has defending officers and may instruct a defending officer or counsel of his choice. It also said the proceedings are open to the public and the media. Why this case is separate from the High Court trial The most important legal distinction is that the court martial concerns Manjang's alleged conduct as a military officer. It focuses on whether he deserted the armed forces in 2017. ADVERTISEMENT The military said Manjang has defending officers and may instruct a defending officer or counsel of his choice. It also said the proceedings are open to the public and the media. Why this case is separate from the High Court trial The most important legal distinction is that the court martial concerns Manjang's alleged conduct as a military officer. It focuses on whether he deserted the armed forces in 2017. The civilian case before the High Court concerns allegations linked to events during the rule of former president Yahya Jammeh. In July 2026, prosecutors amended that case. The Point reported from the High Court proceedings that four murder counts were withdrawn and replaced with two counts of assault causing actual bodily harm. Manjang pleaded not guilty to the assault counts. That amendment did not decide whether Manjang committed the alleged assaults, and it did not turn the military desertion allegation into part of the civilian case. Each proceeding has its own charge, forum and evidentiary questions. International reports have sometimes summarised the earlier case as a murder prosecution that was dropped. Africanews, citing AP , and Al Jazeera's AFP report both connect the new military hearing to the wider effort to address abuses from the Jammeh period. The precise current position, however, is that the court martial concerns desertion while the amended High Court case concerns assault allegations. ADVERTISEMENT How Manjang returned to The Gambia Manjang left The Gambia after Jammeh lost the December 2016 presidential election to Adama Barrow. XTRAfrica's profile of President Adama Barrow explains the political transition that ended Jammeh's rule and placed the country on a difficult path of institutional reform. Gambian authorities announced Manjang's arrest in Senegal's Casamance region on 29 November 2025. The Alkamba Times reported that the operation involved Gambian and Senegalese security services. He was later returned to The Gambia. An Associated Press report on his January 2026 High Court appearance said Manjang denied the murder charges then before the court. Those charges were subsequently replaced by the assault counts described above. The Junglers and the transitional-justice record Manjang has been publicly identified as a former commander of the Junglers, a unit accused of carrying out killings, disappearances and torture during Jammeh's rule. Those descriptions arise from testimony and findings associated with The Gambia's Truth, Reconciliation and Reparations Commission, as well as later court cases. They should not be presented as convictions against Manjang. Trending Now Kenya, China Sign Deal for 80 Off-Grid Solar Systems . ADVERTISEMENT The commission investigated abuses committed during Jammeh's presidency and recommended prosecutions in a number of cases. Some proceedings involving alleged Jammeh-era crimes have taken place outside The Gambia, while the country has continued developing its own accountability process. The new court martial is narrower than that history. Its task is to decide the desertion allegation under military law. The prosecution must establish the elements of that charge, and Manjang retains the presumption of innocence. What happens next The General Court Martial will hear the prosecution's evidence and any defence challenge to the allegation that Manjang left his post with the intention of deserting. The military panel's rulings, the defence response and any scheduled hearing dates will determine the next stages. The High Court assault case will continue on a separate track. Reporting on either case should keep the two proceedings distinct, identify allegations as allegations and reserve any conclusion on guilt for the relevant court. • Kenya moves to repatriate citizens recruited by Russia

Kenya says citizens recruited to fight for Russia in Ukraine can return under amnesty as Nairobi pushes repatriation and a recruitment halt. Kenya says it is moving to bring home citizens recruited to fight for Russia in Ukraine, with returnees set to receive amnesty under a new arrangement announced after talks in Moscow, according to a BBC report . The shift gives Nairobi a forward path on both repatriation and legal protection for those coming back. Foreign Minister Musalia Mudavadi said Kenya and Russia had agreed that no more Kenyans would be recruited, while those already on the front line and unwilling to continue would be allowed to disengage and travel home. That position aligns with a report on the Moscow talks , which said Kenya had secured a “stop list” arrangement to block further enlistment. The next step for Nairobi is managing the return process while stepping up action against the networks accused of luring young Kenyans abroad with promises of civilian work. Earlier reporting , said many recruits were allegedly misled before being sent into the war zone, adding pressure on the Kenyan government to intervene. Under Kenyan law, joining a foreign army without state approval is illegal and can carry a prison term, but the amnesty pledge signals that the government is treating many of the cases as coercive or deceptive recruitment rather than straightforward criminal enlistment. The policy also widens Kenya’s response from diplomacy to prevention, with officials now expected to focus on repatriation, anti-trafficking enforcement and tighter oversight of overseas job agencies. Kenya’s foreign ministry has said 44 citizens have already been repatriated, while others remain hospitalised, missing, killed or still active in the conflict, according to the BBC. The government’s immediate challenge is to turn the Moscow agreement into a workable return mechanism for those still trapped in or near the war. • As Rwanda marked the 30th anniversary of its 1994 genocide, President Paul Kagame faced scrutiny for his decision to attend a Champions League football match between Arsenal and Bayern Munich in North London. This visit coincided with a national period of mourning, during which Rwandan authorities had advised against celebratory and sporting events. On April 9 , the same week Rwanda remembered the over one million victims of its genocide, President Kagame was in the UK not only to watch the football match but also to visit Prime Minister Rishi Sunak at No. 10 Downing Street. This meeting, announced to civil servants with only a few days' notice, primarily focused on the controversial UK-Rwanda deportation deal, which involves sending asylum seekers to Kigali for processing. Back in Rwanda, the national police's website had listed restrictions for the commemorative week, advising against activities such as sports competitions and public celebrations. Despite this, a government spokesperson later clarified that these restrictions were based on outdated guidelines and insisted that the current government policy did not prohibit such activities. The president's decision to attend the football match has sparked debates both domestically and internationally. Opposition leader Victoire Ingabire Umuhoza criticized the mixed messages sent by the government's actions, highlighting the confusion it caused among Rwandans who are solemnly commemorating the genocide. It is understandable that the people in Rwanda and abroad question the fact the president went to watch a football match during the period of mourning for the victims of the genocide against Tutsi – especially since the authorities here in Rwanda had issued directives during this period. It creates confusion among Rwandans,” Victoire Umuhoza said. President Kagame, who has led Rwanda since 2000 and is known for his staunch support of Arsenal — evidenced by his frequent social media posts about the club — has previously faced criticism for his government's strict control over political expression and the suppression of opposition. This incident has once again brought to light the complex dynamics of leadership and remembrance in Rwanda, as the country continues to navigate the delicate balance between honoring its past and moving forward.
