Jean Pierre Bemba: We can not allow Rwanda to take our land Feb 20, 2025 Facebook X (Twitter) WhatsApp Copy link Jean-Pierre Bemba, Vice Prime Minister of Transport and Communications Jean-Pierre Bemba, Vice Prime Minister of Transport and Communications, visited Isiro, the main city of Haut-Uélé province in northeastern Democratic Republic of Congo, on Tuesday. His goal was to encourage young people to join the national forces in large numbers to fight against Rwanda and its allies. Upon landing at Isiro’s national airport, Bemba headed to the city center. There, he addressed thousands of locals, mainly young people, during a public rally. He urged the youth, who are physically capable, to heed President Félix Tshisekedi’s call to defend the country’s territorial integrity. As a former Defense Minister and veteran fighter, Bemba emphasized that the President is committed to achieving peace in the eastern part of the country. This effort, he explained, involves diplomatic, political, and military measures to ensure that no foreign nation claims any part of Congolese land. “This is the time to stand firm. As it’s often said: we may have lost a battle, but not the war. What happened before cannot happen again, and the President is working tirelessly to restore peace. Young people aged 18 and above, let’s stand together—it’s about our land. We cannot allow Rwanda to take it from us,” he stated. In response to Rwandan aggression, Bemba has been touring several provinces for weeks, urging young people to join the army. In the Greater Eastern region, his aim is to see at least 100,000 youths answer the President’s call to defend their nation. • The African Development Bank (AfDB) is poised to increase infrastructure funding as Africa's economic growth is projected to accelerate. According to AfDB President Akinwumi Adesina, growth is expected to rise to 3.7% this year and 4.3% next year, up from 3.1% in 2023. Speaking at the bank's annual meeting, Adesina highlighted the resilience of African economies despite challenges such as climate change, geopolitical tensions, global inflation, and rising debt. Over the past nine years, the AfDB has invested more than $50 billion in infrastructure projects across the continent. Adesina also mentioned that the International Monetary Fund (IMF) recently approved the use of Special Drawing Rights (SDRs) by multilateral banks like the AfDB. SDRs are interest-bearing international reserve assets allocated to IMF member countries based on their shareholding. Adesina expressed optimism that channeling the approved $20 billion SDR limit to multilateral development banks could enable the AfDB to leverage up to $80 billion in new financial support. The bank is actively involved in several major infrastructure projects, including raising $3.2 billion for the East Africa standard gauge railway, which will connect Tanzania, the Democratic Republic of Congo, and Burundi. Additionally, the AfDB is providing $500 million for the development of the Lobito Corridor, aimed at linking Zambia, Angola, and the Democratic Republic of Congo.
