Peres Jepchirchir of Kenya set a new world record for a women-only marathon event at the London Marathon on Sunday, April 21, achieving a dual triumph by putting herself in pole position to defend her Olympic title. Jepchirchir delivered an outstanding performance, showcasing a commanding finish and outpacing her competitors to cross the finish line on The Mall with a time of 2 hours, 16 minutes, and 16 seconds. This remarkable feat not only earned her victory but also shattered the previous women-only marathon world record of 2:17:01, set by Mary Keitany in 2017 at the same event. The women’s elite race in London traditionally starts ahead of the men's field, giving the women their own separate contest. For Jepchirchir, this victory is likely to secure her selection for Kenya’s Olympic marathon team for the upcoming Paris Games. Her performance exceeded her own expectations, with her focus on Olympic preparation rather than record-breaking runs. This win marks a significant comeback for her after a third-place finish in the previous year's London Marathon. Jepchirchir's confidence will undoubtedly be fortified by her late sprint to victory, a tactic she believes gives her an edge in the closing stages of a race. Complementing her success was fellow Kenyan Alexander Mutiso Munyao, who claimed victory in the men's race with a time of 2 hours, 4 minutes, and 1 second. The day was particularly poignant as the London Marathon also commemorated Kelvin Kiptum, last year’s champion from Kenya who tragically passed away in a car accident in February at the age of 24. - Pallaso Biography: Age, Real Name, Songs, Family & Awards
Read Pallaso’s biography: age, real name, family, US years, hit songs, albums, awards and return to Uganda’s music scene. Pallaso is a Ugandan Afrobeats singer, songwriter and producer whose career has crossed two continents and more than two decades. Born Pius Mayanja in Kampala, he first recorded as Lizard, spent years developing his music in the United States, and returned home after “Amaaso” gave him the opening he had been waiting for. His official X account now documents an artist still releasing at full speed: after the award-winning “Malamu,” the romantic “Nalonda Nemala” and the 2025 album We Outside , his catalogue continued with several 2026 singles. Pallaso’s story is not simply about belonging to Uganda’s famous Mayanja musical family; it is about leaving, rebuilding and finding his own place within it. Who is Pallaso? Pallaso, born Pius Mayanja, is a Ugandan Afrobeats artist known for “Amaaso,” “Malamu” and “Nalonda Nemala.” A member of the musical Mayanja family, he rebuilt his career after returning from the United States and became the 2021 Zzina Artist of the Year. Formative Beginnings: From Lizard to a First Song in Kampala Pallaso was born Pius Mayanja on 5 September 1987. Apple Music identifies him as being from Kampala, while a New Vision report on his 36th birthday confirms the date and year. He is 38 as of 3 August 2026 and will turn 39 in September. Music was already close to home. His brothers include Jose Chameleone, Weasel and the late AK47, placing him inside one of Uganda’s best-known popular-music families. That connection created access, but it also set a difficult standard: Pallaso had to become more than another Mayanja surname. He performed from childhood and used the name Lizard during his earliest professional period. A Pulse Uganda account of his beginnings says he learned studio routines around Chameleone’s operation by 2002 and released his first song in 2003. Pallaso has given different titles for that first recording in interviews “Mudigidde” is widely cited, while he told The Observer it was “Obulamu Bwakiseera.” The firm point is the year: 2003 marked his recorded debut. His schooling moved through several institutions in Uganda before he left while in Senior Five. Pulse reports that he later completed high school in Pennsylvania. The move interrupted the most visible part of his Ugandan career, but it did not end the ambition behind it. The American Years and the Album Called Change Pallaso spent roughly a decade in the United States. Away from Kampala’s established music circles, he learned to produce, direct and build projects with fewer familiar structures around him. He also adopted the Pallaso stage name, replacing Lizard with an identity derived from Pius. The clearest document of that period is Change , a collaborative album with the artist The Mess. In a detailed 2021 interview with The Observer , Pallaso said he produced the project himself and directed its videos. He described it as the last album he released in America before coming home. That interview also captured the faith that carried him through a career with more than one beginning: “I don’t think I am lucky; I think I am blessed.” The United States gave Pallaso technical independence, but Uganda remained the audience and cultural centre he missed. His eventual return was therefore not a retreat. It was a decision to bring the skills of the diaspora period back into a market where his name, language and family history had greater meaning. ADVERTISEMENT “Amaaso” Turns a Homecoming into a Breakthrough The decisive moment arrived in 2014. Radio and Weasel were in the United States when Pallaso joined them for “Amaaso.” The collaboration became his first major Ugandan breakthrough and convinced him that a full return could work. His recollection to Monitor was direct: “Amaaso” was the record that changed his visibility. Back in Kampala, Pallaso moved through the Team No Sleep circle before establishing Team Good Music. He followed “Amaaso” with a dense run of collaborations and solo records, among them “Mundongo” with Sheebah, “Go Down Low,” “Twatoba” with Davido, “Mama,” “Kilila,” “Mpeke” and “Bareke Abo.” Readers can explore Pallaso’s available catalogue through his verified XTRAfrica songs page . The period also placed him within a broader generation that was professionalising Uganda’s urban pop scene. His route differed from the survival story behind Eddy Kenzo’s international rise , but both careers showed that Ugandan pop could build from local-language records into regional collaborations. Pallaso’s strength was versatility: melodic Luganda love songs could sit beside dancehall, Afropop and R&B without requiring him to abandon his Kampala identity. Awards and Craft: “Malamu,” “Nalonda Nemala” and Full Strength Pallaso’s most important second rise began around 2020. “Malamu” combined an immediate melody with romantic writing grounded in everyday emotion. He told The Observer that the song drew from real and imagined experiences, friends, family and daily life. “My love life experiences … all inspire my music.” “Malamu” became more than another hit. At the 2021 Galaxy FM Zzina Awards , Pallaso won Artist of the Year, Best Male Artist and Song of the Year for the record. That three-award sweep remains his clearest verified awards milestone. “Nalonda Nemala” extended the run in 2021, while Lover Man gathered his romantic-pop identity into album form. Songs such as “Ani Oyo,” “Bareke Abo” and “Mpa Love” reinforced a style based less on one fixed genre than on a recognisable emotional approach: direct hooks, love-centred storytelling and a voice able to move from soft phrasing into dancefloor urgency. Selected achievements include: 2021 Zzina Artist of the Year. 2021 Zzina Best Male Artist. 2021 Zzina Song of the Year for “Malamu.” Collaborations with Radio and Weasel, Davido, Sheebah, King Saha and other regional artists. A 2023 headline concert at Lugogo Cricket Oval, reviewed by Daily Monitor as a well-rehearsed performance despite the competing attention around Alien Skin’s same-day show. Pallaso’s Career Timeline Year Event Significance 2003 Released his first recorded music as Lizard Established his professional starting point in Uganda. 2004 Relocated to the United States Began the diaspora period that developed his production and directing skills. 2013 Released Change with The Mess Completed his major American album chapter before returning home. 2014 Released “Amaaso” with Radio and Weasel Created his Ugandan breakthrough and encouraged his permanent return. 2016 Released Mama Consolidated his solo catalogue and included “Twatoba” with Davido. 2020–2021 Broke through again with “Malamu” and “Nalonda Nemala” Shifted Pallaso into a stronger, romance-led phase of his career. 2021 Won three Zzina Awards Confirmed his peak recognition as artist, male performer and song winner. 2025 Released We Outside Delivered a ten-track album through Team Good Music and Ditto Music. 2026 Released “Tubamanyi” and other singles Demonstrated that the veteran artist remained highly active. Personal Journey: The Mayanja Name and the Man Behind the Music Pallaso does not deny the advantage of growing up around Jose Chameleone. He frames it as education rather than entitlement. In his 2023 conversation reported by Pulse, he explained that watching his older brother helped him avoid mistakes that could have cost him heavily. Access to a studio and stage experience mattered, but the long American interval meant Pallaso still had to create a separate route home. ADVERTISEMENT His family connections continue to shape how the public reads his career. Chameleone’s reach has since expanded into regional media ownership, including the 2026 launch of Chameleone FM in Burundi , while Weasel remains part of Pallaso’s breakthrough story through “Amaaso.” The brothers represent different branches of the same Ugandan musical household rather than interchangeable careers. Pallaso is also a father. In a 2018 Monitor interview about family and public expectations , he named two children, Dinari and Maisha, and spoke warmly about his mother’s insistence that he remain in school. His relationship status has been reported differently over time, so a current partner should not be stated as settled fact without a fresh first-person confirmation. That distinction matters because Pallaso has often been treated as a public personality before he is treated as a working musician. His own response is grounded: he told Monitor that audiences expect perfection, “yet, I am only human.” The sentence suits a career that has included departures, returns, public rivalry and repeated rebuilding. Ugandan Identity and the We Outside Chapter Pallaso opened 2025 with We Outside . Apple Music lists the album as a ten-track, 34-minute Afrobeats release issued by Team Good Music and distributed by Ditto Music. It is his latest verified studio album, following Mama in the platform’s main album catalogue. His release pace remained high in 2026. Apple Music lists “Mashallah,” “Wepime,” “The One,” “Diana,” “Gumitte,” “Malidadi” and “Tubamanyi,” with “Tubamanyi” dated 8 June 2026 as the latest release displayed in late July. A New Vision account of the Sanyu Sanyu Festival also shows that his live identity remains central to the career. Pallaso’s Future Direction Pallaso’s public thinking has moved toward a wider defence of Ugandan and African musical identity. In a 29 July 2026 post on his official X account, he challenged the idea that commercial trends should decide artistic value: “Instead of copying Nigerian sounds, let us explore Africa’s own rich cultures.” — Pallaso, official X post Pallaso’s Impact and Legacy That position connects his current work to the larger Ugandan music catalogue on XTRAfrica , where local-language pop, dancehall and contemporary Afrobeats coexist. It also explains why his longevity cannot be reduced to a famous surname. Pallaso’s emerging legacy lies in the persistence of a musician who returned home, rebuilt his audience and kept Ugandan musical identity at the centre of the conversation. - Jonathan Leads AU‑COMESA‑IGAD Mission to Observe Uganda Elections
Former Nigerian leader Goodluck Jonathan leads a joint African observer mission to monitor Uganda’s Jan. 15, 2026 polls, with 84 experts from across the continent. Former Nigerian President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan arrived in Kampala this week to lead a joint election observation mission organised by the African Union (AU), the Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa (COMESA) and the Inter‑Governmental Authority on Development (IGAD) ahead of Uganda’s general elections on 15 January 2026, according to a report by P.M. News Nigeria . An official statement from the regional blocs said the mission was invited by Uganda’s government and the Electoral Commission of Uganda to monitor voting across the country. The multi‑organisation mission is composed of 84 short‑term observers drawn from ambassadors accredited to the AU, election management officials, civil society representatives, human‑rights specialists, and gender and media experts. Jonathan is supported by Ambassador Shemsudin Ahmed Roble, a member of the COMESA Committee of Elders, and Commander Abebe Muluneh Beyene from IGAD. Observers have been sourced from 27 African countries including Algeria, Botswana, Burundi, Cameroon, Côte d’Ivoire, Ghana, Kenya, Nigeria, South Africa, Tanzania and Zimbabwe ensuring a broad regional representation. According to the mission’s arrival statement, teams will be deployed to polling stations nationwide to monitor the opening of polls, voting, closing procedures and vote counting . The observers will assess the polls based on Uganda’s electoral laws as well as continental and international frameworks such as the OAU/AU Declaration on the Principles Governing Democratic Elections, the African Charter on Democracy, Elections and Governance and the International Declaration of Principles for International Election Observation. The mission said its engagement will extend beyond polling stations to interactions with state authorities, political parties, media, civil society organisations and other observer teams. The AU‑COMESA‑IGAD mission plans to issue a preliminary statement on 17 January 2026 in Kampala and follow up with a comprehensive report within a month of the final results. Officials underscored that the joint mission aims to promote transparency and adherence to democratic norms, echoing similar statements from regional bodies. Uganda’s general elections will determine the president, members of parliament and local government leaders. The country has registered about 21 million voters, and the presidential race features eight candidates, including incumbent President Yoweri Museveni, who has led the nation since 1986, and opposition figures such as Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu (popularly known as Bobi Wine), Nathan Nandala Mafabi, Gregory Mugisha Muntu, Mubarak Munyagwa Sserunga, Frank Bulira Kabinga, Robert Kasibante and Joseph Mabirizi. Museveni’s long tenure and the competitive field have drawn regional and international attention to the credibility of the upcoming vote. Observers and rights groups have emphasised the importance of a transparent process to bolster democratic consolidation in Uganda. Cardinal Pietro Parolin visits Burundi to mark 60 years of Holy See-Burundi ties, signing seven new agreements in health, education, and security. Vatican Secretary of State Cardinal Pietro Parolin is in Burundi for a five-day working visit aimed at strengthening diplomatic, religious, and social cooperation between the Holy See and the East African nation. Cardinal Parolin arrived in Bujumbura on 12 August 2025, where he was welcomed by Vice-President Prosper Bazombanza, senior Catholic clergy, and hundreds of faithful. The Apostolic Nunciature had earlier confirmed the visit, which marks a significant moment in the 60-year diplomatic relationship between the Holy See and Burundi. Meeting with President Ndayishimiye On 13 August, President Évariste Ndayishimiye , widely known as “Neva Wacu,” hosted Cardinal Parolin at the Ntare Rushatsi Presidential Palace. President Ndayishimiye commended the Catholic Church for its role in Burundi’s national development, particularly in the social sector. - DCI targets Uganda-linked phone theft routes in Nairobi arrests
DCI arrested seven suspects in Nairobi and recovered 150 phones as police probe routes moving stolen devices to Uganda. Kenya’s Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) says it has arrested at least seven suspects and recovered more than 150 stolen electronic devices in an intelligence-led operation targeting a suspected cross-border phone theft network linked to Uganda. The operation was conducted on January 23, 2026, in Nairobi, and focused on individuals suspected to be involved in receiving stolen mobile phones, illegally refurbishing and flashing devices, and transporting them to neighbouring countries mainly Uganda. Investigators said the arrests form part of ongoing efforts to trace additional suspects believed to be connected to the same network, which police suspect uses informal markets and cross-border delivery arrangements to move stolen devices as originally reported by The Star News kenya . According to the DCI’s Operation Support Unit, the suspected network is believed to facilitate movement of stolen electronics through informal trading channels, with payments allegedly made upon delivery across the border. Police said the operation recovered 150 assorted mobile phones, 16 tablets and six laptops. DCI Director Mohamed Amin said some of the recovered phones appeared to have been tampered with through flashing and factory resets, while others still contained details believed to belong to their original owners. He said investigators also face difficulties tracing stolen devices where gadgets are dismantled and sold as spare parts. “Some gadgets are dismantled and sold as spare parts, making it difficult to trace them despite ongoing investigations into reported theft cases,” Amin said, adding that similar operations were being carried out in other areas. Police said one Ugandan national was arrested in Shauri Moyo, where detectives searched her residence and recovered 75 assorted mobile phones packed in three boxes sealed with yellow tape, as well as two laptops. Investigators said she is suspected of acting as a link between receivers in Kenya and buyers in Uganda an allegation that puts the cross-border element at the centre of the ongoing case. A second Ugandan national was also arrested in Shauri Moyo in connection with the same investigations, police said.
