- 4 Simple Tricks to Get Rid of Ants in Your Home | Xtrafrica
4 Simple Tricks to Get Rid of Ants in Your Home louis Buyisiwe Sep 15, 2024 Facebook X (Twitter) WhatsApp Copy link Ants infestation inside a home, showing how these pests are attracted to everyday objects Dealing with ants can be a real nuisance, but with these four easy tricks, you can eliminate them for good. Follow these steps to keep your home ant-free. Keep Your Kitchen Spotless Ants are drawn to food crumbs and spills, especially sugary or sticky items. To prevent them from invading your kitchen, make sure to clean up any messes immediately. Wipe down counters, sweep floors, and store food in airtight containers to reduce the chance of ants finding a food source. Use Safe Ant Sprays or DIY Solutions While commercial ant sprays can be effective, many contain harsh chemicals. A safer alternative is a homemade solution of dish detergent and water. This mixture works by suffocating ants on contact and is less harmful to your home environment. Simply spray it on any ant trails or directly on the insects themselves. Set Ant Baits Near Entry Points Baiting is a powerful way to control ants. Place commercial ant baits like Terro near the ants' entry points, or make your own using a mixture of Borax and sugar. The bait will attract ants, which then carry it back to their colony, helping to eliminate the infestation at the source. Seal Gaps and Cracks Closing off entry points is crucial to keeping ants out for good. Inspect your home for gaps, cracks, and holes around windows, doors, and baseboards. Use caulk or weather stripping to seal these areas and prevent ants from finding their way inside. - Urgent Action Needed to Fight Antimicrobial Resistance in Africa | Xtrafrica
Urgent Action Needed to Fight Antimicrobial Resistance in Africa Dr.Martin Nov 25, 2024 Facebook X (Twitter) WhatsApp Copy link Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is becoming a serious threat in Africa. Without urgent action, it could cause 4.1 million deaths every year by 2050, disrupting healthcare and the economy. The World Health Organization (WHO) in the African Region has created a Regional Strategy for AMR 2023–2030 , helping all 47 member countries develop National Action Plans. So far, 38 of these plans have been approved by national governments. Challenges like limited funding, not enough skilled workers, and weak systems to monitor AMR make the fight difficult. The regional strategy focuses on: Supporting teamwork between different sectors. Improving diagnosis. Creating strong programs to ensure antimicrobials are used wisely. Raising awareness about responsible antimicrobial use. Currently, 43 African countries are part of WHO’s Global AMR Surveillance System (GLASS) . WHO is helping countries improve lab capacities, monitor antimicrobial use, and make decisions based on data. WHO has also introduced an Antimicrobial Stewardship Training Package in countries like the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Ghana, Nigeria, and Zambia. This program trains health workers to use antimicrobials responsibly, slowing the spread of resistance. This year’s World AMR Awareness Week is themed “Educate. Advocate. Act Now” , encouraging global awareness and promoting best practices to fight AMR. “AMR is not only a medical challenge but a broad issue that affects all of society. Africa cannot afford to ignore this threat, but through collaboration, we can reduce its impact and protect public health,” said Dr. Matshidiso Moeti, WHO Regional Director for Africa. WHO and its partners are also working to increase awareness among health workers, leaders, and the public. For example, youth programs in Nigeria have trained hundreds of young people to educate communities about the importance of using antimicrobials responsibly. AMR happens when bacteria, viruses, and other pathogens adapt, making treatments less effective. This makes diseases harder to treat. In 2019 alone, AMR was linked to 1.27 million deaths in sub-Saharan Africa. Overusing and misusing antimicrobials in healthcare, farming, and even waste management also contribute to the problem. Recognizing how human, animal, and environmental health are connected, WHO promotes a One Health approach , which is active in 41 African countries. To strengthen health systems and balance the need for essential medicines with antimicrobial stewardship, more funding is essential. WHO, in partnership with organizations like Africa Centres for Disease Control, is working to increase political support and funding to ensure AMR efforts reach even the most remote populations. What Are Antimicrobials? Antimicrobials meaning An antimicrobial is a substance that kills or stops the growth of microorganisms, which include bacteria, viruses, fungi, and parasites. These agents are essential in treating infections and preventing the spread of diseases. They can be classified based on the type of microorganism they target: Antibiotics : Target bacteria. Antivirals : Target viruses. Antifungals : Target fungi. Antiparasitics : Target parasites. Antimicrobials work by either killing the microorganisms directly or inhibiting their growth and reproduction. For example, antibiotics can prevent bacteria from building their cell walls, leading to their death It's important to use antimicrobials appropriately to prevent the development of antimicrobial resistance, where microorganisms evolve to withstand these treatments, making infections harder to treat. - South Sudan starts cholera vaccination campaign | Xtrafrica
South Sudan starts cholera vaccination campaign Chinedu Bruce Jan 4, 2025 Facebook X (Twitter) WhatsApp Copy link Juba, South Sudan – South Sudan has received over 1.1 million oral cholera vaccine doses to launch a campaign aimed at vaccinating more than 80% of its population. However, the effort faces challenges like poor access to areas with the worst outbreaks. Health workers plan to vaccinate around 9 million people, focusing on children and mothers. The vaccines, which arrived in Juba, will be sent to hotspots like Bentiu next week. The Ministry of Health recently reported 199 deaths and 13,000 cholera cases. Dr. Gabriel Boum Tap, a UNICEF immunization officer, noted that previous vaccine supplies were insufficient due to limited production and distribution challenges. Cholera cases have been recorded in 29 of South Sudan's 79 counties, with Bentiu, Renk, and Juba being the hardest hit. The first case was reported on September 23 in Renk. The vaccination campaign faces difficulties, including limited access to healthcare facilities. Thinjin Khoat, a cholera survivor, described witnessing a child die from dehydration because health workers couldn't provide treatment in time. Many communities struggle to access care due to flooding and security concerns, especially in Bentiu. Cholera, caused by consuming contaminated food or water, can kill within hours if untreated. According to Doctors Without Borders (MSF), poor living conditions in South Sudan have worsened the outbreak. Stephanie Ngai, an MSF coordinator in Bentiu, said the outbreak quickly overwhelmed local response systems, which lack sufficient funding and coordination. The vaccination campaign, supported by partners like MSF and the World Health Organization (WHO), is set to begin on Monday. In Rubkona, WHO will focus on hard-to-reach areas affected by flooding, while MSF will cover camps and towns nearby. The campaign targets children aged one and above. WHO estimates that cholera kills 143,000 people globally each year out of about 4 million cases. - How to Stay Healthy While Working at a Computer All Day | Xtrafrica
How to Stay Healthy While Working at a Computer All Day Dr Chris Mug Aug 27, 2024 Facebook X (Twitter) WhatsApp Copy link Enduring long work hours, a moment of relief through a much-needed stretch In today’s digital world, many of us spend long hours sitting at a desk, staring at a computer screen. Whether you work from home, in an office, or a hybrid environment, this sedentary lifestyle can lead to a range of health issues if not managed properly. Prolonged sitting, poor posture, and eye strain can all contribute to physical discomfort and long-term health problems. However, with some mindful adjustments to your daily routine, it’s possible to stay healthy, energized, and comfortable throughout your workday. Here are some essential tips to help you maintain your health while working at a computer every day. 1. Practice Good Posture Good posture is key to avoiding long-term health issues like neck and back pain, muscle strain, and fatigue. Make a conscious effort to sit up straight with your feet flat on the floor, shoulders relaxed, and your back supported. Proper posture can help improve balance and reduce strain on your body. 2. Invest in Ergonomic Furniture Consider investing in ergonomic furniture to make your workspace more comfortable. A standing desk can allow you to alternate between sitting and standing throughout the day, reducing the risk of sitting-related health issues. A chair with lumbar support will help maintain the natural curve of your spine, and a mouse pad with wrist support can reduce strain on your wrists. Adjust your computer screen so it's at eye level to avoid neck and eye strain. 3. Take Regular Breaks Sitting for long periods can cause stiffness and fatigue. To counteract this, make it a habit to take regular breaks. Every 30 minutes to an hour, stand up, walk around, or do some light stretching. This will not only keep your muscles active but also improve circulation and help reduce mental fatigue. 4. Choose Healthy Snacks The right snacks can keep your energy levels up and help you power through your workday. Opt for snacks that provide a balance of protein, healthy fats, and complex carbohydrates. For example, Greek yogurt with honey and berries is a great choice that provides sustained energy. Avoid sugary snacks, which can lead to energy crashes later in the day. By incorporating these healthy habits into your daily routine, you can improve your physical and mental well-being while working at a computer. Small changes can make a big difference in how you feel both at work and beyond. Healthiest Meats to Include in Your Diet (And How to Cook Them Right) Dr.Martin Sep 4, 2024 Facebook X (Twitter) WhatsApp Copy link When it comes to a balanced diet, lean meat is one of the healthiest options to ensure you're getting essential proteins without the excess fat. According to the USDA, lean meat refers to a three-and-a-half-ounce serving that contains less than 10 grams of fat and no more than 4.5 grams of saturated fat. These cuts provide high-quality protein, containing all nine essential amino acids your body needs but cannot produce on its own. Each type of meat offers unique nutritional benefits, supplying varying levels of iron, potassium, magnesium, and Vitamins like B12. Here’s how you can choose and cook the healthiest meats. What Are the Healthiest Meat Options? Chicken Breast : Known for its high protein and low fat, chicken breast is a versatile option. Turkey : Another lean meat, turkey is packed with nutrients and contains less fat compared to other meats. Pork Loin : A great source of protein, pork loin is leaner than many other pork cuts. Fish (Salmon, Tuna, etc.) : Fish is an excellent source of omega-3 fatty acids and healthy protein. Lean Beef : Opt for cuts like sirloin or tenderloin, which have less fat and offer plenty of iron. Healthy Cooking Tips for Lean Meat Dietitian Amy Goodson offers some practical tips on how to cook meat in the healthiest way possible: Trim the fat : Before cooking, cut away any visible fat, such as the white streaks often seen in steaks (intramuscular fat), to reduce overall fat intake. Choose leaner cooking methods : Grilling, roasting, and baking are excellent alternatives to frying, as they eliminate the need for extra oil and reduce added fats. Marinate smartly : If you’re watching your sodium levels, use herbs like rosemary, thyme, or garlic in place of salt-heavy marinades. This will enhance flavor without the excess sodium. Pairing Your Meat with Healthy Sides The sides you serve with your meat can make or break a healthy meal. For a nutrient-dense plate, try pairing your meat with: Roasted vegetables : Rich in fiber and vitamins. Salads : Choose dark leafy greens for added nutrients. Whole grains : Rice, quinoa, or barley are excellent choices to provide lasting energy. The most appealing part? You would actually find it easier than you imagine! The following are four easy steps you can take to help the environment through what you eat: 1.Eat Locally and Seasonally Eating seasonally and eating what is grown nearer to you than far away farms lowers the amount of fossil fuel burnt in transporting produce over long distances. Seasonal fruits and vegetables tend to be more delicious, hygienic, and cheap-highly preferable forms of foods for everyone. When you buy food from locals, you help in boosting the local businesses. 2.Avoid Ultra-Processed Foods food that has undergone industrial transformation multiple times is termed ultra-processed and from the studies done, these have a more destructive effect on nature. Consumption of such foods is associated with large packaging enough production energy is utilized in the packaging amongst other things. Prefer whole or minimally processed ingredients as the way forward in streamlining the diet without carbon diet. 3.Reduce Meat Consumption Meat is one of the risks since the planning, feeding, and housing of animals is resource costly. You can avoid your meat consumption to a great degree by embracing more plant-based recipes. You can try out something different that doesn’t compromise on your morals - vegetarian or even vegan options. 4.You can buy in bulk. - Five Amazing Health Benefits of Coconut Oil | Xtrafrica
Five Amazing Health Benefits of Coconut Oil H. Expert Britt Enock Sep 7, 2024 Facebook X (Twitter) WhatsApp Copy link Coconut oil has gained immense popularity In recent years, coconut oil has gained immense popularity, not only as a kitchen staple but also as a versatile health and beauty aid. Derived from the meat of mature coconuts, this natural oil has been hailed for its unique nutritional profile and health-boosting properties. Whether used in cooking or applied topically, coconut oil offers a wide range of benefits that can improve your overall well-being. Let’s take a closer look at five key health benefits of coconut oil and why it’s worth incorporating into your daily routine. 1. Boosts Energy Levels Coconut oil is rich in medium-chain triglycerides (MCTs), a type of fat that is easily absorbed by the body. Unlike other fats, MCTs are quickly converted into energy, making coconut oil a great source of a fast energy boost. This makes it an ideal addition to the diet of athletes, people with active lifestyles, or anyone looking for a natural energy lift. 2. Supports Weight Loss One of the standout benefits of MCTs found in coconut oil is their ability to promote a feeling of fullness. Studies show that consuming MCTs can help reduce appetite, which can lead to eating fewer calories throughout the day. By keeping hunger at bay, coconut oil can be a useful addition to weight management strategies, supporting healthier eating habits without the need for strict dieting. 3. Rich in Antioxidants Coconut oil contains antioxidants that help protect the body from oxidative stress, which can contribute to chronic diseases such as heart disease, Alzheimer’s, and certain cancers. The antioxidants in coconut oil can neutralize harmful free radicals, reducing the risk of cell damage and inflammation in the body. Including coconut oil in your diet may help bolster your body’s defenses against long-term health issues. 4. Promotes Skin Health When used topically, coconut oil can work wonders for the skin. It acts as a natural moisturizer, helping to hydrate and soften dry or flaky skin. Its anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties also make it an excellent remedy for minor skin irritations, such as eczema or psoriasis. With regular use, coconut oil can improve skin texture, reduce the appearance of wrinkles, and give your complexion a healthy glow. 5. Strengthens Hair Coconut oil is a popular natural treatment for hair care. Its fatty acids penetrate the hair shaft, increasing flexibility and strength while also reducing protein loss. This makes it a great solution for those dealing with dry, brittle, or damaged hair. Regular application can improve hair health, leaving it looking shinier, smoother, and less prone to breakage. From boosting energy levels and supporting weight loss to enhancing skin and hair health, coconut oil is a powerhouse ingredient that offers multiple benefits. Whether you're looking to improve your diet or add a natural touch to your beauty routine, coconut oil is a simple, effective, and affordable solution. For the best results, ensure you’re using high-quality, cold-pressed virgin coconut oil, which retains the most nutrients. - The Amazing Benefits of Getting Enough Iron in Your Diet | Xtrafrica
The Amazing Benefits of Getting Enough Iron in Your Diet Dr Chris Mug Oct 18, 2024 Facebook X (Twitter) WhatsApp Copy link A balanced assortment of iron-rich foods like salmon, shrimp, nuts, seeds, leafy greens, and legumes, essential for maintaining energy levels, boosting immunity, and improving overall health. Iron is an essential nutrient that plays a crucial role in keeping your body healthy. Incorporating enough iron into your diet offers a range of benefits, including: 1. Increased Energy Levels Low iron levels can lead to persistent fatigue that lasts for weeks or longer. Ensuring you're getting enough iron through foods or supplements helps boost energy and reduces feelings of exhaustion, keeping you energized throughout the day. 2. Reduced Bruising If you bruise easily, low iron could be the cause. Iron supports hemoglobin production, which is necessary for creating platelets that aid in blood clotting. By increasing your iron intake, you can help your body better manage bruising. 3.Quality of Sleep Has Been Enhanced It was reported in a 2015 study that people with low iron levels are likely to suffer from sleep problems like; insomnia, sleep apnea, and have flashes of active sleep. In 2007, a study was also conducted that showed children with autism that were treated with iron therapy had diminished instances of restless sleep. Iron intake in adequate quantities may be beneficial as it helps in maintaining better quality of sleep and better rest overall. 4.Enhanced Immune Function Iron plays an important role in the formation of hemoglobin which is responsible for the transport of oxygen to any damaged cells, tissues or organs. This is essential in overcoming infections and maintaining your body’s immune system. In the absence of a sufficient amount of iron in the body, the immune system is not able to function properly and the chances of falling sick could increase. Iron should be incorporated into your diet as it will help in the general well being, increase in energy, improvement in the quality of sleep, and enhancement of the immune system. - 4 Healthy Breakfast Swaps to Decrease the Intake of Ultra-Processed Food | Xtrafrica
4 Healthy Breakfast Swaps to Decrease the Intake of Ultra-Processed Food Dr Chris Mug Oct 19, 2024 Facebook X (Twitter) WhatsApp Copy link A joyful mother and daughter enjoying a wholesome breakfast together With the busy schedules that people maintain today, ultra-processed foods (UPFs) have become a norm. A study done by healthcare professionals has found evidence that UPFs can be along with serious health issues such as heart disease, obesity, and cancer. With processed foods comprising nearly 60% of the American diet, it is no wonder that the American population is in search of convenient substitutes that are healthy. According to New York-based registered dietitian and nutritionist Tracy Lockwood Beckerman, it is indeed possible to have healthy, quick breakfasts without any concerns of UPFs. Here, we present four quick substitution’s that will allow the consumption of a balanced meal in the morning without there being a heavy reliance on UPFs. 1.Instant Oatmeal – Premade Overnight Oats Oats are a perfect breakfast meal as they are rich in protein and fiber which prevents hunger pangs and also contributes to heart and gut health. What is more alarming, though, is the sheer amount of finished, often-times instant oatmeal packs that are UPFs and boast powdered milk, added sugars and flavorings. Beckerman advises Mush’s ready-to-eat overnight oats for the on-the-go individuals. These oats, which are ready to eat and are made using clean ingredients, make a delicious and nutritious breakfast without it being as instant as instant oatmeal and without succumbing to added sugars and artificial ingredients. 2.Scrap Sugary Cereals in Favor of Real Cereal It is easy to grab a breakfast of cereals, however it is important to note that many of the ready-to-eat cereals have high sugar content and will most likely cause people to have energy spikes and crashes. This is why Beckerman recommends Real Cereal, as it contains no sugar or preservatives at all. The high carbohydrate, protein and fat content has the effect that breakfast cereals should have in the first place — keeping people satisfied till lunchtime. That although some processed bran cereals, oats and rice cereals may have been enriched with vitamins and minerals after these were processed in manufacturing, consuming them in their most basic form allows you to cut back on excessive sugar and preservatives. 3.Utilise High Protein Breakfast Bars Many people are always in a rush and as such, breakfast bars are something people always reach for out of convenience, without realising that some of these bars have excessive sugar and fat, which are not healthy. Instead of opting for other breakfast bars, Beckerman says that it is better to eat The Perfect Bar. This protein and fat combination is great, because it will keep consumers fuller longer and also make it much easier for people to adhere to a diet, as this bar has honey in it which acts as a natural sweetener and has antioxidants. By selecting a bar that focuses on fresh, nourishing ingredients and good, healthy sweeteners, you won’t miss out on the convenience of eating a bar in the morning, while still being able to look after your health. 4.Go for Nut and Seed Based Granola Granola may be a good source of nutrition, but since most manufacturers add high-fructose corn syrup or refined sugar, it ends up being an ultra-processed product. Shephard advises solving the problem with the help of Hampton’s Grocer Granola, which consists of whole nuts, super seeds and is sweetened with wildflower honey. Due to the high-quality ingredients, this granola is favored for its healthy fats and vitamins and its simple straightforward recipe. Gaining nutritional benefits from granola as a part of a balanced diet is realistic, given enough options exist for tasty, crunchy breakfast granola which is free from many of the sugars and additives included in commercial versions. Conclusion: Selecting Better Options that Are Easy to Prepare One would think that America is quite evil by manufacturing ultra-processed foods that taste so good. Yet, at the same time, there are a few nutritionally-rich and fast food types that can be eaten in the morning. She mentions that once these four adjustments have been made, people can begin having their first meal feeling healthy and expeditious.
