  • Ituri Ebola Testing Capacity Surges Past 2,000 Daily Tests

Ituri's Ebola response has expanded testing to over 2,000 daily screenings as cases continue to rise across eastern DRC. Health authorities in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo say Ebola case detection capacity has increased dramatically in Ituri Province, with daily testing rising from just nine screenings to more than 2,000 tests per day, according to a report by local media. The figures were presented during a high-level briefing in Bunia on June 18 attended by ministers responsible for Public Health, Communication, and Social Affairs. Dr. Lola, a member of the Ebola response team, said the improvement reflects stronger community engagement and better coordination between the provincial government, national authorities, and international partners. According to health officials, response structures are now operational across all 36 health zones in Ituri, although the outbreak is currently affecting 20 of them. Community health relays have played a critical role by quickly reporting suspected cases and helping authorities respond faster. The testing expansion comes as the province remains the epicenter of the latest Ebola outbreak in the DRC. The outbreak is caused by the Bundibugyo strain of the virus, which currently has no approved vaccine, according to the World Health Organization . Health authorities also reported that Ituri now has nine Ebola treatment centers with a combined capacity of more than 500 beds. Officials say these facilities have helped improve patient care and increase survival rates. Another encouraging sign is the growing number of recoveries. Response teams reported 78 patients have recovered from the disease, which they describe as evidence that treatment and containment strategies are producing results. The latest figures show that 33 days after the outbreak was officially declared, the DRC had recorded 896 confirmed Ebola cases and 232 deaths across three affected provinces. Ituri alone accounts for 827 confirmed infections, representing the overwhelming majority of cases reported nationwide. The continued expansion of testing, surveillance, and treatment capacity remains central to efforts by Congolese authorities and international partners to contain the outbreak and prevent further spread. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and WHO continue to support monitoring and response efforts as the health emergency evolves. • The United Kingdom has unveiled further details of its contentious plan to deport certain asylum seekers to Rwanda. A recent government document reveals that the initial batch of deportees will be selected from a group of 5,700 individuals, which the Rwandan government has preliminarily agreed to accept. This move forms part of a broader Migration and Economic Development Partnership aimed at tackling illegal immigration and dismantling human smuggling networks. Under the newly enacted legislation, any individual who arrived in the UK illegally after January 1, 2022, falls within the scope of the deportation agreement. This legislation was introduced to circumvent a UK Supreme Court decision that had previously deemed the policy unlawful. Prime Minister Rishi Sunak has indicated that the first deportation flights to Rwanda could commence within 10 to 12 weeks, marking a significant step forward in the government's immigration strategy. According to the Home Office, there is no fixed limit to the number of asylum seekers that can be deported under the five-year deal with Rwanda. The Rwandan administration, led by President Paul Kagame, has expressed willingness to receive an unlimited number of migrants as part of this agreement. Out of the initial group earmarked for deportation, 2,143 individuals are actively reporting to the Home Office and are identifiable for potential detention and removal. The policy has sparked a heated debate across political spectrums in the UK, with proponents arguing that it will effectively deter illegal migration and disrupt the operations of human traffickers. However, opponents criticize the plan as inhumane and predict that it will face significant legal challenges. The policy's potential effects are already being observed, with some migrants opting to move to Ireland from Britain, ostensibly to avoid the possibility of deportation to Rwanda. The urgency of addressing the migration challenge was underscored by the recent tragic deaths of five individuals, including a child, who perished attempting to cross the Channel from France to the UK. More than 7,000 migrants have undertaken the perilous journey this year alone, a record number for the period up to the end of April. As the UK government prepares for the first deportation flights, the international community and domestic observers will closely monitor the unfolding situation . The effectiveness and humanitarian implications of the UK-Rwanda partnership will likely influence future policy decisions in the realm of international asylum and migration management. • DRC and Tanzania Advance Central Corridor Plan to Cut Trade Costs

DRC and Tanzania are advancing Central Corridor cooperation on ports, rail, Lake Tanganyika transport, fibre links and a planned Congolese dry port. The emerging partnership covers ports, railways, Lake Tanganyika transport, cross-border fibre, critical minerals and preparations for a Congolese dry port in Dar es Salaam. The Democratic Republic of the Congo and Tanzania are moving to deepen economic cooperation through a package of proposed transport, trade and digital-connectivity projects that could give Congolese businesses faster access to regional and international markets. Presidents Félix Tshisekedi and Samia Suluhu Hassan agreed to strengthen cooperation along the Central Corridor during talks in Tanzania. The corridor connects eastern DRC to the Indian Ocean through Lake Tanganyika and Tanzania’s transport network. The discussions identified several priority areas, including improvements to the ports of Kalemie, Kigoma and Dar es Salaam, stronger lake transport, progressive railway interconnection and the deployment of cross-border fibre-optic infrastructure. The DRC is also preparing plans for a Congolese dry port in Dar es Salaam. If implemented, the facility could provide dedicated cargo-handling, customs and logistics services for goods entering or leaving the DRC through Tanzania. A second gateway for Congolese trade For the DRC, the proposed projects could create a stronger eastern route to international markets. Congolese importers and exporters currently face high transport costs, long delivery times and limited logistics options, particularly in the country’s landlocked eastern and southeastern regions. A more efficient Central Corridor could provide businesses with an alternative connection to the Indian Ocean while strengthening Kalemie’s position as a strategic logistics centre on Lake Tanganyika. The cooperation is expected to focus on improving connections between Kalemie and Kigoma before goods continue through Tanzania’s road, railway and port networks. Better infrastructure would not benefit the mining industry alone. Agricultural producers, traders, transport companies and small businesses could also gain from more reliable access to domestic and export markets. Such infrastructure could support government services, telecommunications, financial transactions and businesses operating along the trade corridor. • The leader of South Africa's Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP), Velenkosini Hlabisa, announced on Wednesday that his party has agreed to join a government of national unity. This coalition includes the African National Congress (ANC) and the largest opposition party, the Democratic Alliance (DA). Speaking at a media briefing in Durban, Hlabisa stated that the only options were to either become part of the government or remain in the opposition. He emphasized that the electorate demanded political parties find common ground. This development follows the ANC's loss of its majority in last month's elections, leaving South Africans eagerly anticipating the formation of the next government. Although the DA and ANC have yet to comment, this marks the first official indication of an agreed unity government. The ANC had previously expressed its intention to form a unity government and had engaged with all opposition parties. The new parliament, which is set to be sworn in on Friday, is expected to elect a president , with the ANC insisting that Cyril Ramaphosa must remain the country's leader. The ANC's vote share fell below 50% for the first time since Nelson Mandela's victory in 1994, necessitating coalition partners. The ANC received about 40% of the vote, the DA 22%, former President Jacob Zuma's MK party 15%, and the radical Economic Freedom Fighters 9%. The conservative IFP, with a strong Zulu base, secured around 4%. Many ANC activists prefer a coalition with the EFF and MK, both led by former senior ANC officials, but such a coalition might alarm investors due to their policies on land seizure and mine nationalization. The business community favors a coalition between the ANC and DA. Including the IFP in the coalition could mitigate criticism that the ANC is "selling out" by collaborating with the DA, perceived by some as representing the white minority. The DA opposes key ANC policies, including the black empowerment program and the National Health Insurance (NHI) Bill for universal healthcare. Hlabisa assured IFP supporters that the party would maintain its identity in the coalition, recalling their previous coalition experience following the 1994 elections, when Mandela's ANC worked with the National Party and the IFP despite past conflicts.
