WAJIR, 9 October 2026 — A patient assessed for suspected Ebola at Habaswein Sub-County Hospital has returned a preliminary negative laboratory result, Wajir Governor Ahmed Abdullahi announced on 8 October. County and national health officials will continue monitoring the patient and providing medical care.

The announcement changes the status of the Wajir alert: it does not establish a second confirmed Ebola infection. It also does not overturn the separate confirmed imported case in Nairobi or end Kenya’s wider public-health response.

Has Ebola been confirmed in the Wajir patient? No. Wajir authorities announced a preliminary negative laboratory result on 8 October 2026. The patient remains under monitoring and medical care. The result concerns this patient’s sample; it is not a nationwide all-clear and does not reverse Kenya’s separately confirmed imported case in Nairobi.

According to The Eastleigh Voice’s Wajir report, samples were sent to the National Public Health Virology Laboratory in Nairobi. The county described the result as preliminary and negative for Ebola.

That wording should be preserved. The announcement establishes the reported result for the sample tested. It does not announce that the patient has recovered, has been discharged or no longer needs care.

The governor’s reassurance is therefore accompanied by continued clinical follow-up. People Daily’s account of his statement says the County Department of Health and Ministry of Health will monitor the patient and provide care under established public-health procedures.

An accurate description is “a suspected case with a preliminary negative test,” rather than “a confirmed Ebola patient who has recovered.” Those phrases describe different situations.

Why health workers investigated the patient

County authorities said the patient had travelled from the Democratic Republic of Congo through Uganda to Kenya. His travel history and clinical presentation prompted health workers to investigate a possible infection.

Why health workers investigated the patient

County authorities said the patient had travelled from the Democratic Republic of Congo through Uganda to Kenya. His travel history and clinical presentation prompted health workers to investigate a possible infection.

Reuters’ report on the announcement also identifies the result as preliminary and negative. Travel history helped explain why testing was undertaken; it did not, by itself, prove infection or establish where an exposure had occurred.

The distinction is especially important during a health alert. A person can require assessment because of symptoms and travel without becoming a laboratory-confirmed case.

The World Health Organization’s Ebola guidance explains that early symptoms can resemble those of other infections, including malaria and typhoid. Laboratory investigation is therefore important. Similar symptoms are not enough to diagnose an individual, and the county’s negative-result announcement should not be used to invent a different diagnosis.

How to read the earlier denial

On 8 October, The Star reported Health Cabinet Secretary Aden Duale’s denial of reports about a suspected Ebola patient in Wajir. It quoted his response as “Not true.”

The county’s statement described an investigation and preliminary negative result. These communications should be reported separately: the minister’s brief response did not provide a laboratory report, while the governor’s announcement explained the testing outcome and continuing monitoring.

Neither statement supports calling the Wajir patient a confirmed Ebola case. Nor does the difference between them establish misconduct by any official or hospital. The useful clarification for residents is the result announced by the county and the care that continues.

The Nairobi case remains a separate event

WHO’s official account of Kenya’s imported Bundibugyo virus case says samples from the Nairobi patient tested positive at two laboratories. That patient died on the night of 5 October, and Kenya notified WHO on 6 October.

The Wajir announcement does not revise those findings. XTRAfrica’s earlier Kenya Ebola response update explains the distinction between contacts being followed up and confirmed infections. Monitoring or quarantine figures should not be described as a count of positive cases.

For historical regional context, XTRAfrica has also covered WHO’s confirmation that Uganda’s outbreak ended and Africa CDC’s response to the DRC outbreak. Those earlier reports are background, not current Wajir case totals or a new assessment of an individual traveller.

What residents should do now

The governor urged residents to remain calm, avoid circulating unverified information and follow updates from Wajir County and the Ministry of Health. People experiencing unusual signs of illness were advised to seek medical attention at the nearest health facility.

For information on Ebola and other health concerns, the ministry’s toll-free 719 line is available, according to KBC’s ministry-sourced guidance.

Residents should follow clinicians’ advice rather than use a headline to decide that assessment or follow-up can stop. Any further testing, discharge decision or change in public-health instructions should come from the responsible health authorities.
