While Joseph Kabila resurfaces in Goma claiming to “save the Congo,” Xtrafrica found an investigative leaked report that exposes how his family's fortune was built by bleeding the country dry, with support from Rwanda and Uganda.
Before Joseph, it was Laurent-Désiré Kabila who began the dynasty. Backed by a regional alliance led by Paul Kagame (Rwanda) and Yoweri Museveni (Uganda), Kabila seized power in 1997. But his gratitude came at a price.
When Laurent-Désiré Kabila became president, he immediately used state assets to repay allies for their help in the war, especially through a business called Comiex-Congo." — Congo Research Group
Comiex, a shady import-export firm, partnered with banks, mines, and fuel companies. It received at least $31 million in state funds, much of it sent to a bank in Rwanda, while holding diamond rights over 274 square miles. Former auditors confirmed it was “a private trust run by people close to Kabila, but entirely created with state assets.”
According to a report by the Congo Research Group (CRG) at NYU, Kabila and his family control over 80 companies across Congo and abroad. These include diamond mines, real estate, farms, airlines, fuel depots, telecoms, and even road construction firms.
Kabila’s sister owns a secret stake in Vodacom Congo. His brother profited from World Bank contracts. His daughter was listed as a mining shareholder at just four years old." — CRG Report
The report uncovers that:
The family owns 71,000+ hectares of farmland, nearly 10x the size of Manhattan.
Many of their businesses received contracts from the UN, the World Bank, and US agencies, despite obvious conflicts of interest.
Some assets were protected by Republican Guard soldiers, violating Congo's own laws.
Billions in Resources, Zero in Accountability. While the people of Congo suffer from poor services, insecurity, and displacement, the Kabila dynasty quietly built a vast fortune using state connections, secret deals, and offshore companies in Panama, Niue, and Seychelles.
Even the IMF pulled out. In 2012, the International Monetary Fund canceled a $500M program due to hidden mining deals linked to Kabila’s family.
Why This Matters Now
Joseph Kabila, the same man behind these questionable fortunes, is now back in Goma whispering about a political comeback, without ever answering for how his family got rich while Congo remained poor.
