ABUJA, Nigeria — 31 August 2026: TETFund's National Research Fund application platform is live on the announced opening date for the 2026 grant cycle. Eligible lecturers in Nigerian public tertiary institutions can create principal-investigator accounts and prepare concept notes online. The cycle has a total approved envelope of ₦10 billion, and the submission deadline is 15 October 2026.

The ₦10 billion is the fund for the entire cycle not an automatic award to each applicant. A concept note is only the first stage; TETFund says only projects assessed as fundable will be invited to submit full proposals.

Who can apply for the 2026 TETFund NRF grant? The call is for eligible lecturers in Nigeria's public universities, polytechnics and colleges of education. Applications begin with a principal investigator submitting a concept note through TETFund's official NRF platform. Applicants should confirm the current rank and institutional requirements before submitting.

Who is eligible for the 2026 NRF cycle

TETFund's current call is directed at lecturers in public tertiary institutions in Nigeria. The principal investigator leads the research team, submits the application and is accountable for the project. The institution acts as the coordinating institution and guarantor for proper use of any grant awarded.

The call encourages multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary research. It covers 30 priority thematic areas across humanities and social sciences; science, engineering, technology and innovation; and cross-cutting subjects. TETFund's official homepage displays the 2026 call as an active notification.

Applicants should read the current call and instructions attached to the portal before relying on old summaries. TETFund has used rank requirements in earlier cycles, and current reports say a university principal investigator should be at least a senior lecturer, or a principal lecturer in a polytechnic or college of education. The portal and current call remain the final authority for an applicant's eligibility.

How to start the application

Go directly to the official TETFund NRF platform. New applicants can select New Principal Investigator? Create Account here, while returning users can sign in.

The portal's principal-investigator user guide says registration asks for the applicant's name, phone number, sex, date of birth, rank, institution type, accredited institution, highest qualification and email address. The email must be accessible because the account is completed through a verification link.

The email must be accessible because the account is completed through a verification link.

After activation, the principal investigator can open the Prepare Concept Note module, complete the required fields, review the entry and submit it. The guide warns that a submitted concept note can no longer be edited. Applicants should prepare and proofread the text offline before pasting it into the platform.

PUNCH's application guide says the process is entirely online and that concept notes will be evaluated by the National Research Fund Screening and Monitoring Committee. Principal investigators whose notes are successful will be asked to prepare full proposals.

Deadline and what happens next

The deadline for concept notes is 15 October 2026, Nigerian time, and TETFund says there will be no extension. Waiting until the final hours carries avoidable risks, including registration delays, email-verification problems or incomplete fields.

The first submission does not require every applicant to upload a final full proposal. TheCable's report on the call explains the sequence: concept notes are screened first; selected teams are invited to submit full proposals; potentially fundable proposals may then be defended before the committee; approved projects proceed to the board for grant approval and disbursement.

The 2026 cycle follows the 2025 round, under which TETFund says more than ₦6.09 billion supported 174 research projects. That comparison describes the earlier cycle and does not guarantee the number or value of awards in 2026.

What applicants should verify before submitting

Confirm that the principal investigator's institution appears in the portal's accredited list and that the selected thematic area matches the project. Review the research brief and application guidelines linked on the platform, then check that the concept note responds to the current call rather than a previous year's wording.

Use only the tetfund.gov.ng and nrf.tetfund.gov.ng domains. TETFund lists nrfgrants@tetfund.gov.ng for enquiries and technical support on the platform. Do not send an application, password or identity document to an unofficial WhatsApp contact or a person promising approval.

The most important distinction is between applying and winning. Creating an account and submitting a concept note enters the assessment process; it does not create an entitlement to part of the ₦10 billion fund.
