To apply for a Kenyan passport online, start on the official Directorate of Immigration Services eCitizen portal at dis.ecitizen.go.ke, complete the application, pay the prescribed fee, then book a biometrics appointment at a passport processing centre.

Kenya issues ePassports valid for 10 years. Online application and payment are required before you submit documents and capture biometrics in person.

Quick answer

  • Portal: dis.ecitizen.go.ke (Immigration / passport services).

  • After pay: Book an appointment, then attend with originals for photo and biometrics.

  • Ordinary fees (KES): 34 pages 7,550; 50 pages 9,550; 66 pages 12,050.

  • Status: Check on eCitizen, or SMS your application number to 22222.

  • Timeline: About 14 working days after biometrics, per the Immigration service charter.

Official portal

Use only the official DIS eCitizen portal: https://dis.ecitizen.go.ke/.

Confirm passport types and fees on the Directorate of Immigration Services site: immigration.go.ke/type-and-fees and immigration.go.ke/passport-section.

What you need

Requirements depend on whether you are applying for a first passport, replacement, lost, or mutilated booklet. Immigration lists these on its application requirements page.

First-time (new) applications typically need:

  • Duly filled application Form 19 and 2 payment invoices

  • Original birth certificate and a copy (citizens by birth), or certificate of registration (citizens by registration)

  • Original national ID and a copy (adults)

  • Consent form for minors, plus parents’ IDs or death certificates where applicable, and parents’ birth certificates

  • Payment of the prescribed fee

  • Any other document Immigration may request

Replacement (still holding the old passport) typically needs:

  • Form 19 and 2 payment invoices

  • Original national ID and a copy (adults)

  • Consent form for minors

  • Previous passport and a copy

  • Payment of the prescribed fee

Lost passport typically needs:

  • Form 19 and 2 payment invoices

  • Original ID and a copy (adults)

  • Personal statement explaining the loss

  • Sworn affidavit supporting that statement

  • Police abstract for loss of passport

  • Copy of the lost passport biodata page if available

  • Payment of the prescribed fee

Mutilated passport typically needs:

  • Form 19 and 2 payment invoices

  • Original ID and a copy (adults)

  • Previous passport and a copy

  • Personal statement explaining the damage

  • Sworn affidavit supporting that statement

  • Payment of the prescribed fee

Immigration FAQs state a recommender’s ID copy is no longer a requirement. Your birth certificate and national ID details should match; if they do not, correct them at civil registration or the National Registration Bureau before you apply.

Current fees

Official ordinary and related fees published by Immigration (KES):

  • Ordinary A series (34 pages): 7,550

  • Ordinary B series (50 pages): 9,550

  • Ordinary C series (66 pages): 12,050

  • Diplomatic passport: 15,050

  • Mutilated passport: 20,050

  • Lost passport: 20,050

Pay only through the official eCitizen invoice. Do not pay agents or unofficial mobile numbers.

How to apply step by step

  1. Open dis.ecitizen.go.ke and sign in with your eCitizen account (or create one if you do not have one).

  2. Select Immigration / passport application services and choose the correct application type (new, replacement, lost, or mutilated) and passport series.

  3. Fill the online form carefully so names, dates, and ID numbers match your birth certificate and national ID.

  4. Upload clear scans of the documents required for your category.

  5. Generate the official invoice and pay the prescribed fee on eCitizen.

  6. Print or save Form 19 and your payment invoices (Immigration asks for two invoices when you present).

  7. Book a biometrics appointment on the portal and choose a passport processing centre.

  8. Attend on your appointment date with originals for document check and biometric capture (photo and fingerprints).

  9. Track progress on eCitizen, or SMS your application number to 22222.

  10. Collect the passport at the same centre where you did biometrics when it is ready.

Where to do biometrics

After payment, book through eCitizen and enrol biometrics at one of these passport processing centres:

  • Nairobi (Nyayo House)

  • Kisumu

  • Mombasa

  • Eldoret

  • Nakuru

  • Embu

  • Kisii

  • Kericho

  • Bungoma

Kenyans abroad should contact the nearest Kenyan embassy or high commission for consular passport guidance.

Processing and status

  • Immigration FAQs: about 14 working days after biometrics, as in the service charter.

  • Check progress by logging into your eCitizen account.

  • Or SMS your application number (on your receipt) to 22222.

How to collect

When collecting, Immigration FAQs say to carry:

  • The invoice with the token attached

  • Your original national ID

  • For a replacement, the old passport booklet as well

Collect from the same passport centre where you did biometrics, not a different office.

Common problems

  • Name or date of birth mismatch on ID and birth certificate: Correct the records at civil registration or NRB before applying.

  • Missing documents on appointment day: Reschedule, or ask customer care at the passport centre to help you rebook.

  • Child applications: A biological parent should apply and present the child for biometrics unless you have court-issued legal guardianship. A consent form authorises Immigration to issue a passport for a minor.

  • Uploaded scans but still asked for originals: Immigration says originals are still needed for multiple secure records.

Scam warnings

  • Use only dis.ecitizen.go.ke and immigration.go.ke.

  • Pay only the official eCitizen invoice. Immigration does not take cash at the receiving counter for eCitizen services.

  • Ignore brokers who promise faster passports for an extra fee outside official channels.

Useful contacts

  • Email: info@immigration.go.ke / dis@immigration.go.ke
