Security forces and local allied fighters have kept the Pinga area on heightened alert after an attempted AFC/M23 assault was reported near the town, in North Kivu’s Walikale territory. According to reports

, the attack was repelled on Fungura Hill on Monday, March 2.

Local customary sources cited by the outlet said the attackers came from Mpety before targeting FARDC positions supported by Wazalendo fighters in Banakindi (Kisimba group), overlooking Katobi. Heavy and light weapons fire was reported for several hours, heightening fears among residents.

Fungura Hill is described as a key defensive position for Pinga, with local sources warning that a breakthrough could open access toward surrounding settlements. The outlet reported that FARDC and Wazalendo contained the assault and pushed the attackers back to their initial positions.

With Walikale among several North Kivu territories seeing recurring clashes, residents around Pinga remain worried about renewed hostilities in the coming days, as the area stays under close surveillance, according to the report.
