DNA tests are underway after human remains were found inside a crocodile recovered from South Africa’s Komati River, according to a BBC report.
The case follows the disappearance of a 59-year-old businessman whose vehicle became stranded while attempting to cross a flooded low bridge near Komatipoort. Police later found the vehicle empty, raising fears that he had been swept away.
South African police said Captain Johan “Pottie” Potgieter was involved in a highly dangerous helicopter operation to recover the crocodile from the river. The South African Police Service praised his bravery, saying the mission required exceptional risk in difficult conditions.
Local broadcaster SABC News reported that Mpumalanga police are awaiting DNA results to confirm whether the remains belong to the missing businessman.
The incident has drawn attention to the dangers faced by search-and-rescue teams during flood emergencies, especially in river systems where wildlife, fast-moving water and poor access can complicate recovery efforts.
