The Cameroonian Football Federation (FÉCAFOOT) has decided not to renew the contract of head coach Rigobert Song following a lackluster performance at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Ivory Coast. Song, who has been in charge of the Cameroon national team since February 28, 2022, will lose his job when his contract expires on February 24, 2024.
During his tenure, Song managed six wins, suffered nine defeats, and secured eight draws in 23 matches. However, the team's early exit from AFCON 2023 after a 2-0 loss to Nigeria in the Round of 16 prompted the decision to seek a new direction for the national team.
The Cameroon FA, led by former football star Samuel Eto’o, aims to rejuvenate the team and find a fresh approach to future competitions. As the contract comes to an end, the search for a new head coach begins, with expectations of revitalizing Cameroon's football fortunes.
Despite the disappointment, Song's legacy as a former Cameroon international and his contributions to football remain significant. The federation now looks ahead to identifying a leader who can guide the team to success in upcoming tournaments. [africatopsports]. [Wikipedia]
