Indian music fans have been paying tribute after celebrated singer Arijit Singh announced he will stop accepting new playback singing assignments, according to a BBC report. Indians pay tribute after Ariji…
The 38-year-old singer shared the announcement on Instagram on Tuesday, marking the end of a defining era in contemporary Bollywood music. Playback singing — where vocal performances are recorded for actors to lip-sync on screen — has long been central to Indian cinema, and Singh’s voice has been one of its most recognizable in recent years.
Following the announcement, social media platforms were filled with messages reflecting on the emotional impact of Singh’s music, with fans crediting his songs as soundtracks to major moments in their lives.
Singh did not provide a detailed explanation for his decision. Reports indicate he will complete existing projects and continue making music independently, shifting his focus beyond commercial film productions.
The move comes despite Singh’s continued global success. He recently performed to a sold-out crowd at Wembley Arena in London, an achievement reached by only a handful of Indian playback singers. He has also collaborated with international artists, including Ed Sheeran.
Despite his popularity, Singh has consistently distanced himself from celebrity culture. He rarely participates in promotional appearances, avoids publicity-driven events, and has previously stated that he is uncomfortable with fame.
Born in 1987 in Jiaganj, West Bengal, Singh was raised in a musically inclined family and received classical training from an early age. He first gained national attention as a contestant on the reality show Fame Gurukul in 2005 before working behind the scenes as a music programmer.
His breakthrough came in 2013 with Tum Hi Ho from Aashiqui 2, a song that became a nationwide hit and established him as a leading voice in Bollywood. He went on to record music in multiple languages and work with top composers including A.R. Rahman, Pritam, Vishal–Shekhar, and Amit Trivedi.
In recent years, Singh had already begun reducing his workload, citing discomfort with overexposure. While opinions differ on his decision, many fans view the move as a natural step for an artist seeking creative independence.
