Eskom, South Africa’s power company, has arrested six people in a fraud case at Kusile Power Station. Investigations showed that in 2018, Eskom paid R857,977 for a pump that originally cost only R18,835. Even more shocking, records showed that the same pump had already been bought in 2015, meaning the company paid twice for it. This caused Eskom a big financial loss.
The arrests happened on 14 and 15 March 2025 in a joint operation between Eskom and law enforcement agencies, including the National Joint Operational and Intelligence Structure (NATJOINTS) and the Mission Area Joint Operational Centre (MAJOC). Among those arrested are a former Kusile Procurement Officer and a Procurement Manager.
How the Arrests Happened
On 14 March 2025, police arrested the former Kusile Procurement Officer.
On 15 March 2025, four more people, including the Kusile Procurement Manager, were arrested.
Two of the suspects were caught trying to leave the country.
Authorities are still looking for two more suspects.
The arrested individuals will appear in the eMalahleni Magistrates’ Court on 17 March 2025.
Eskom’s Commitment to Fighting Corruption
Eskom’s CEO, Dan Marokane, said that most employees are honest and hardworking, but those involved in fraud will be investigated and punished. He also said that Eskom is working closely with the police to stop corruption and protect the company’s assets.
To improve security, Eskom has created a new Group Investigations and Security Division, which will focus on fraud cases. The company has also asked the public to report any corruption through the Eskom Crime Line at 0800 11 27 22 or WhatsApp at 081 333 3323.
