Zimbabwean football legend Peter Ndlovu is facing criticism after receiving a luxury car gift worth R2.6 million (Ksh19 million) from controversial businessman Wicknell Chivayo. Chivayo, known for his involvement in corruption scandals, gifted Ndlovu a 2024 BMW X6, citing the footballer's contributions to Zimbabwean football.

Chivayo shared the news on Instagram, expressing admiration for Ndlovu's achievements, calling him "the greatest of all time" in Zimbabwe's football history.

“This is a small token of my appreciation for your outstanding contribution to the game of football and for inspiring generations of Zimbabwean soccer fans,”

Chivayo wrote.

Despite Chivayo's praises, many Zimbabweans reacted negatively, pointing to Chivayo's past controversies, including corruption allegations over undelivered power contracts worth millions. Critics argued that accepting the gift disrespected Zimbabweans who are suffering due to the country's economic challenges.

Social media users urged Ndlovu to reject the car, questioning how the funds were obtained and criticizing the country's failing infrastructure. One user commented,

"Accepting this car means ignoring the plight of those who cannot access healthcare due to corruption."

Ndlovu, however, accepted the gift, sparking further debate. Born in Bulawayo, Ndlovu was the first African player to join the English Premier League, signing with Coventry City in 1991. He also played for Birmingham City and Sheffield United before moving to South Africa to play for Mamelodi Sundowns.

Ndlovu remains one of Zimbabwe's most celebrated athletes, having captained the national team to their first Africa Cup of Nations in 2004.
