Umeme Limited, an important company in electricity distribution in Uganda, has given tough conditions before handing over operations to Uganda Electricity Company Distribution Limited (UECDL).
Umeme’s 20-year concession officially ended on February 28, 2025. However, the company will continue managing electricity distribution in Uganda during a transition period. Umeme clearly stated, "Umeme will cease operations in Uganda at the end of March."
The handover to UECDL will only take place after Uganda's government completes the payment for the buyout agreement. Umeme explained this by saying, "This will only happen once the Government of Uganda pays the buy-out amount and Umeme receives it."
Until the full payment is received, Umeme maintains the right to operate the electricity distribution system according to their original concession agreement.
