Dr. Kizza Besigye
Ugandans have been advised to pay less attention to the arrest of veteran opposition leader Dr. Kizza Besigye and instead focus on people struggling with alcohol and drug addiction.
In an article titled
"Worry Less About Besigye, Think More About Those Trapped in Alcohol and Drugs," the writer argues that while Besigye’s case is a political matter, there are many Ugandans suffering silently from substance abuse, which needs more attention.
The article raises a question: why do people still use alcohol and drugs even when they know the dangers? The writer shares a personal choice of avoiding such substances from a young age and encourages others to make healthier decisions. Instead of alcohol, they suggest drinking tea, coffee, or fruit juice.
Addiction is described as a type of self-imprisonment that destroys individuals, families, and communities. Unlike Besigye’s political detention, which is temporary, the damage caused by substance abuse is long-lasting and, in many cases, cannot be reversed.
The article challenges Ugandans to change their priorities and focus on helping those who are caught in the cycle of addiction. It encourages discussions and solutions to fight substance abuse in society.
