Uganda rolls out new speed regulations with higher fines to tackle rising road accidents
The Ministry of Works and Transport has officially announced the new Traffic and Road Safety (Speed Limit) Regulations 2024. These new rules, already active, introduce higher fines for drivers who break speed limits, especially along busy roads like the Northern Bypass and Lugogo Bypass.
New Fines for Speeding
If you drive faster than the allowed limit, you will now face much heavier penalties:
Exceeding by 10–30 km/h: Fine of UGX 200,000 (previously UGX 100,000).
Exceeding by over 30 km/h: Fine of UGX 600,000 (previously UGX 200,000).
For example, the Northern Bypass has a limit of 70 km/h. If you are caught doing 100 km/h, you’ll pay UGX 600,000. Similarly, Lugogo Bypass allows only 30 km/h, so if you drive at 60 km/h there, expect the highest fine too.
These penalties will be enforced through speed cameras and routine traffic police checks. Officials have made it clear: no excuses will be accepted, and claiming you didn’t know the law won’t save you.

The government says that rising road accidents and reckless speeding are major concerns. Traffic reports show that speeding is among the top three causes of road deaths in Uganda.
“These new fines are not just to punish drivers,” explained a Ministry spokesperson. “They are meant to save lives and build a culture of careful driving.”
Drive Safe, Save Money
Avoiding these fines is simple: respect speed limits, stay updated on traffic rules, and always think about safety first. It’s better to arrive late than to risk your life—or lose hundreds of thousands of shillings.
Let's work together to make Uganda's roads safer for everyone.
