The Ugandan government has allocated Shs350 billion for the 2025 African Nations Championship (CHAN), which the country will co-host with Kenya and Tanzania from February 1 to 28, 2025. This funding is part of a larger budget exceeding Shs1.3 trillion, aimed at preparing for both CHAN 2025 and the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) 2027. The budget includes Shs1 trillion dedicated to infrastructure projects, such as the construction of Akii-Bua and Hoima Stadiums.
According to Bernard Patrick Ogwel, General Secretary of the National Council of Sports (NCS) and Chair of the CHAN Uganda Local Organizing Committee's (LOC) Finance Sub-Committee, the government has already committed $30 million (approximately Shs114 billion) for the construction of Hoima City Stadium. An additional $13 million (about Shs49.4 billion) is expected soon to support CHAN preparations.
Dennis Mugimba, spokesperson for the Ministry of Education and Sports and head of the LOC's Communication and Signage Sub-Committee, confirmed that CHAN will require Shs350 billion. He emphasized that the government is committed to ensuring all service providers are paid promptly, aligning with the Confederation of African Football's (CAF) standards.
The LOC has established nine sub-committees to oversee various aspects of the preparations, including infrastructure development, logistics, and communication. This comprehensive approach aims to ensure that Uganda meets all requirements for successfully hosting CHAN 2025.
